The Houston Texans’ backfield took a significant hit on Sunday afternoon as they lost starting running back David Johnson to a concussion. At the time, Johnson only had two carries for 18 yards. However, his backup Duke Johnson Jr. did an admirable job, picking up the offensive workload in the Texans’ 27-25 win over Jacksonville.

The versatile Johnson Jr. had 73 yards of total offense on 20 touches and a touchdown. Within those 73 yards, he had 41 rushing yards, which was second behind star quarterback Deshaun Watson, who had 50 yards.

As of right now, we don’t know the extent of David Johnson’s concussion and if he will play next week against the Cleveland Browns. He’ll have to go through the league’s concussion protocol to get cleared to play.

If David Johnson does not get cleared, that could open up the door for Duke Johnson Jr. to be a potential FLEX option next week against the Cleveland Browns. Heading into this week’s game against Jacksonville, Johnson Jr. was not a factor in the Texans’ offense or in fantasy football.

In fact, Johnson’s best fantasy performance happened last season in Week 13 against the New England Patriots. The former Miami Hurricanes running back scored 15 fantasy points, which consisted of nine carries for 36 yards plus five receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Coincidentally, Johnson’s stat line from Sunday was almost similar to what he did in Week 13. Therefore, that gives us an idea of what he can do going forward. He’s not a guy that they want carrying the ball a ton of times. But if you can get him 15 touches per game, he’ll provide solid FLEX value. Johnson is rostered in 15 percent of Yahoo fantasy leagues.

Up next — Browns, Patriots, Lions, Colts
