In the offseason, the Carolina Panthers upgraded their wide receiver unit, signing Robby Anderson to a two-year, $20 million deal. When this signing became official, many fans wondered what role Curtis Samuel would play in the Panthers’ offense. The former Ohio State standout had a breakout 2019 season, where he had 54 receptions (105 targets) for 627 yards and six touchdowns.
Fast forward to Week 10, and we are finally seeing Samuel reach his full potential under the direction of new offensive coordinator Joe Brady. The 5-foot-11 Samuel is not only lining up outside, but he’s also being used in the backfield. This new revelation of having Samuel in the backfield came about when the Panthers did not have star running back Christian McCaffrey for six weeks.
At that time, Mike Davis was the starter, while Samuel became the swiss army knife who can make plays when out in space. In Week 7 against the Saints, the 5-foot-11 wideout scored his first rushing TD on the season, along with six receptions for 48 yards. It was the first time Samuel scored double-digit fantasy points this season (11.3)
The next week against the Falcons, Samuel set another career-high for fantasy managers. He scored 17.4 fantasy points, which consisted of 54 total yards on seven touches and two total touchdowns. With that type of performance in consecutive weeks, Samuel was beginning to make waves as a potential FLEX play.
On Sunday, Samuel established him as a priority waiver wire claim against the Kansas City Chiefs. He had 118 yards of total offense on 12 touches and a touchdown. A majority of those yards came on the receiving end as Samuel had a career-high nine receptions for 105 yards.
If opposing defenses are worried about D.J. Moore and Anderson going over the top, it will allow Samuel to dominate underneath. The 24-year-old wide receiver is currently rostered in 29 percent of Yahoo fantasy leagues.
