Robbed of stages, galleries and high-traffic markets, dozens of Colorado artists have joined a national drive to route money toward the hardest-hit creatives this holiday season.
Artists Sunday, founded by Austin, Texas-based photographer Christopher Sherman, launches online Sunday, Nov. 29 with the goal of creating “Black Friday type-buzz for artists and artisans to make the Sunday after Thanksgiving the most profitable day of the year for artists,” organizers said in a press statement.
The program’s website, artistssunday.com, offers an online directory of nearly 1,500 artists selling their work directly to buyers. That includes 250 Colorado artists, artisans and craftspeople, and 23 state-level partners such as Western States Art Federation, Colorado Creative Industries and Veterans Arts Council.
“Nationwide, we are growing fast with more than 3,200 artists and 400-plus partner organizations in all 50 states,” wrote a spokesman for the program via email. The alliance includes a number of art agencies, municipalities, counties, chambers of commerce and nonprofits, representing thousands of additional artists. It also features 80 commercial patrons such as art galleries and stores, including eight in Colorado.
In addition to links for 250 artists, the Colorado landing page for artistssunday.com features two-dozen local promotions related to Artists Sunday, from free shipping to discounts of 15% to 30% on various items — paintings, sculpture, jewelry, pottery, fashion, photography, crafts. Sellers hail from nearly every county in the state.
The promotions fit nicely between Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, founder Sherman has said. (Nov. 29 also happens to be Museum Store Sunday — which 17 metro-area museums will be participating in; see museumstoresunday.org for an interactive map.)
“Colorado is proud to be a part of this nationwide effort to support the creative class,” said Margaret Hunt, director of Colorado Creative Industries. “Artists Sunday is a great way to support local artists, celebrate creativity and find unique, meaningful gifts for everyone who appreciates the arts.”
The effort is particularly urgent, organizers say, since the coronavirus crisis that has shut down 96% of in-person art shows, fairs and festivals — where many artists generated most of their annual revenue. According to American for the Arts, the arts economy has lost $14 billion since March.
“Black Friday and Cyber Monday may offer the hot deals on the latest gadgets,” Sherman said, “but Artists Sunday provides you a special opportunity to give a personal gift.”
