WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind 14 points from graduate transfer Ian DuBose, Wake Forest overcame a standout debut from Longwood freshman point guard Justin Hill and pulled away late to defeat the upset-minded Lancers 71-60 win Friday evening at LJVM Coliseum.
DuBose scored nine of his 14 points in the game's final 13:11 and sparked an end-game rally that saw Wake Forest (2-0) overcome a 43-38 Lancer lead in the second half. His go-ahead layup with 11:57 to play gave the Demon Deacons a lead they held the rest of the way and sparked a 10-0 rally that led the youthful Lancers into a double-digit deficit for the first time all night.
The late-game performance from DuBose and double-digit efforts from Jonah Antonio, Jahcobi Neath and Ismael Massoud were enough to offset a pair of double-digit scoring nights from Longwood's point guard tandem of redshirt junior Juan Munoz and true freshman Hill, which combined for 24 points. Munoz, who led Longwood with 10.3 points per game in 2019-20, scored a team-high 13 of those over a team-high 34 minutes, while Hill broke out in his debut with 11 points, four assists and three steals.
Hill and Munoz were part of a starter-heavy scoring effort for the Lancers, who – without key contributors Heru Bligen and DeShaun Wade, who missed the game with injuries – also got nine points from junior forward Christian Wilson and eight from sophomore forward Leslie Nkereuwem. However, Wake Forest's pressure defense under first-year head coach Steve Forbes forced Longwood into 24 turnovers, which the opportunistic Demon Deacons converted into 25 points.
Including Hill, six newcomers made their debut for head coach Griff Aldrich's young Lancer team Friday, and five of those – Hill, Jermaine Drewey, Jesper Granlund, Bennett Mohn and Zac Watson – scored their first collegiate points in a Longwood uniform. Both Granlund and Hill started, while Drewey played 18 minutes and Zac Watson and Nate Lliteras both played double-digit minutes.
Longwood shocked Wake Forest at home at the end of the first half, battling to a 34-34 halftime draw after Mohn drilled an open three-pointer from the corner in the closing seconds. The Lancers went on to open up a 7-0 run in the second half en route to a five-point lead before the Demon Deacons found their groove with their 10-0 run that turned the tables for good.
Wake Forest graduate transfer Jonah Antonio hit back-to-back three-pointers during that Wake Forest rally as part of a 12-point night. He was one of four Deacs to finish in double figures
Longwood's second game of the 2020-21 season is slated for this Thursday, Dec. 3, against Regent in Willett Hall. However, the schedule remains subject to change as the Lancers look to find a replacement for the Nov. 26 game against Delaware State that was canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test result from an individual outside of the Longwood program.
LongwoodLancers.com will announce any game additions or adjustments to the Lancers' 2020-21 schedule.
