Each week of the NFL season, we will identify fantasy football waiver-wire pickups specifically for those of you looking for streaming options in deeper formats (including IDP leagues). These are players available in a majority of ESPN Fantasy leagues who have enticing matchups in the week ahead that make them worthy of consideration for your lineup.
While you might notice some overlap with Field Yates' pickup column that publishes on Mondays, an important distinction is that the options mentioned in this column are focused solely on this week's matchup and not the players' values for the remainder of the season.
Do you need replacement options for injured players? Or are you merely dealing with depth issues? A roundtable of fantasy analysts and NFL Nation reporters will join me to identify some choice names to consider each week.
Here are some of our favorites for Week 7:
Quarterback
Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders (29.1% rostered; vs. Buccaneers)
With some tough matchups and bye weeks hitting the market this week, the streaming tier of quarterbacks is shallow, while a few key trends seem to be in Carr's favor. Tampa has been really effective on defense thus far, but I'm willing to counter the matchup metrics in deeper leagues with some shares of Carr given this game boasts a robust point total of 53.5 points, resulting in an implied projection for the Raiders to score around 25 points. Given how strong Tampa's rush defense is, Carr seems likely to play a big role in an offense expected to post a good bit of scoring. Another positive is how well Carr has connected with Henry Ruggs III on high-value vertical attempts, a decisive element of the Raiders' upset of the Chiefs a few weeks back. -Jim McCormick
Running Back
Boston Scott, Philadelphia Eagles (11.7% rostered; vs. Giants)
With the Giants ceding 26.0 fantasy points per game to backfields, ninth most in the league, there is some real potential for Scott to deliver helpful fantasy results on Thursday night. New York's back seven has been particularly weak in stopping receiving backs, with the Giants allowing six catches and 50.5 receiving yards per game to backfields, some of the more generous rates in the NFL. With Miles Sanders sidelined with an injury for this division matchup, Scott could prove particularly helpful to the Eagles as a receiving valve. Scott closed out the 2019 season as a Darren Sproles clone for Philly and could again deliver flex value at this fickle and shallow position. -J.M.
J.D. McKissic, Washington Football Team (33.1% rostered; vs. Cowboys): This isn't exactly a breakout candidate, but McKissic's touches continue to rise, including eight carries and six catches for a combined 84 yards in Week 6. And now he is facing a historically bad Cowboys defense that ranks last in points allowed and next-to-last in run defense. You would think that Washington would lean more heavily on rookie Antonio Gibson as the season goes on, but Washington reporter John Keim said the team has acknowledged that Gibson still has a lot to learn as he transitions from playing receiver in college, while McKissic is more polished and more of an elusive runner for now. -Mike Triplett, NFL Nation Saints reporter
A bonus tip: Stash Jets RB La'Mical Perine (19.2% rostered; vs. Bills) as a potential late bloomer. While we usually focus on just this week's game, it's worth noting that ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini said the plan is for Perine to wind up getting about twice as many carries as veteran Frank Gore going forward, as the team looks to the future. -Mike Triplett
Zack Moss, Buffalo Bills (50.5% rostered; at Jets)
Moss missed three games due to injury and mustered just five touches in his return on Monday, but things could change in Week 7, when the Bills are heavy favorites against the hapless Jets. It's easy to imagine a scenario where the Bills run up an early lead and feed Devin Singletary and Moss in the second half. Moss had 11.7 fantasy points against the Jets in Week 1. -Tom Carpenter, ESPN Fantasy editor and analyst
Wide Receiver
Keelan Cole Sr., Jacksonville Jaguars (20.0% rostered; at Chargers)
It's not the big Week 6 (six grabs for 143 yards against the Lions) that has me buying Cole this week as a viable streaming option, it's his safe slot role for a team I expect to be playing from behind against the rested Chargers. Cole has more yards and receptions from the slot than any three of his teammates combined and that'll play just fine against a defense that is allowing a league-high 10.7 yards per slot pass attempt this season (nearly 30% above league average). -Kyle Soppe, ESPN Fantasy researcher
Christian Kirk, Arizona Cardinals (47.5% rostered; vs. Seahawks)
It's hard to expect consistent targets for Kirk in such a crowded WR corps (his 86 yards and two TDs came on just two catches Monday). But the third-year pro does have a high ceiling, and his production has been ticking up (five catches for 78 yards in Week 5). Most importantly, he is facing the Seahawks' porous pass defense. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Seattle has allowed 19 more catches and 167 more yards to WRs than any other team in the NFL this season -- despite playing just five games so far. Opposing WRs have averaged 60 fantasy points per game against Seattle in PPR leagues. -Mike Triplett
Tim Patrick, Denver Broncos (27.3% rostered; vs. Chiefs)
After catching four of eight targets for 101 yards in Week 6 versus New England, Patrick has now topped the 100-yard mark in two straight games. He brings a vertical element to the Denver offense outside of the numbers, which meshes with the aggressive throwing style of QB Drew Lock. Looking at the matchup versus the Chiefs in Week 7, Patrick fits as a WR3/4 in deeper leagues -- with more upside in non-PPR formats. -Matt Bowen, NFL writer and analyst
Tight End
Greg Olsen, Seattle Seahawks (21.2% rostered; at Cardinals)
The theme with Olsen has been volatility; he's posted three weeks with either five catches or a touchdown and then two games that were basically no-shows. It's admittedly a gamble to deploy Olsen in lineups, but such is the case when streaming tight ends, where many options are dependent on touchdowns to really deliver. Working in Olsen's favor is that he's delivered two solid weeks already this season without touchdown production and next faces a Cardinals defense allowing 11 fantasy points per game to tight ends. -J.M.
Defense/Special Teams (D/ST)
Kansas City Chiefs (44.2% rostered; at Broncos)
The Chiefs' defense doesn't get much attention compared to the team's elite offense, but it's worth noting Kansas City is second only to the Steelers in pressuring passers this season. Facing a mistake-prone Drew Lock with a solid pass rush and some ball hawks in the secondary, Kansas City is a solid streaming defense to recruit for this weekend. -J.M.
Philadelphia Eagles (15.9% rostered; vs. Giants)
Only the other New York team has been a more rewarding matchup for opposing D/STs from a fantasy perspective than the Giants. Given opponents have averaged 10.5 fantasy points facing Daniel Jones and the Giants this season, Philly's defense makes for a worthy streaming group given real potential for multiple sacks and splash plays. -J.M.
Individual Defensive Players (IDP)
Defensive Line
Trey Flowers, Detroit Lions (7.1% rostered; at Falcons)
Coming off his best game of the season, Flowers now has at least three tackles in all but one outing and is finding some momentum as a pass-rusher. -J.M.
Linebacker
Ja'Whaun Bentley, New England Patriots (7.0% rostered; vs. 49ers)
With 18 tackles the past two weeks and freedom to pursue the pocket as a pass-rusher on some passing snaps, Bentley is in a good spot to return value against a surging 49ers offense. -J.M.
Defensive Back
Emmanuel Moseley, San Francisco 49ers (3.7% rostered; at Patriots)
Moseley is averaging nearly 10 fantasy points per game on the season using ESPN's IDP scoring key, with that average even higher in the games he's been healthy. He is a productive defensive back in a good spot to produce against Cam Newton this Sunday. -J.M.
