The Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Rams will meet in primetime for the third straight season, and the narrative is setting up similarly to that memorable 2018 match-up at Soldier Field.
If history is any indication, this will be another low-scoring affair that will feature two of the league’s dominant defenses. Which means it’ll ultimately come down to which offense does just enough to get the win.
Before the game, we caught up with managing editor Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire to get the scoop on the Bears’ Week 7 opponent.
Here are five questions with Rams Wire:
1 The Rams are 4-2 through these first six weeks. But all four of their wins have come against the entire NFC East. Was the loss to the 49ers a hiccup or an indication of what we can expect from this Rams squad moving forward?
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports
I think it was somewhat of a hiccup. They were playing well up to that point but the offense simply couldn’t get anything going in the first half, and the defense had tackling issues. They haven’t given up a touchdown in the second half since Week 3, so they made the necessary adjustments, but the offense just struggled to find any consistency through the air. It is mildly concerning that their wins have only come against the NFC East, however. They need a statement win and Monday night against the Bears would be one.
2 Jared Goff hasn’t had his best games against this Bears defense. Just one year removed from a massive $134 million contract extension, is Goff living up to expectations?
Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports
He’s played much better this season than he did in 2019. He was inaccurate, making poor decisions and missing open receivers far too often last year, raising some concerns about whether he was worth the money the Rams gave him. This season has been a good improvement, largely thanks to better protection from the offensive line. He hasn’t committed many turnovers and is getting the ball into his receivers’ hands, which has created big plays after the catch.
3 Outside of Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, who should Bears fans know on the Rams defensive side of the ball?
Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports
Darious Williams has gotten off to a really good start. He plays outside corner opposite Ramsey and rarely allows many catches in coverage. He has two interceptions already, both coming in the clutch when the Rams needed their defense to make a play. The Rams play a lot of zone coverage, which allows Williams to keep his eye on the quarterback and break on the ball when thrown his way. Nick Foles would be wise to attack Troy Hill in coverage more than Williams and Ramsey.
4 What match-up intrigues you most in this game?
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
Jalen Ramsey against Allen Robinson. The Rams haven’t used Ramsey to shadow No. 1 receivers much, but this is the perfect opportunity to do so. He knows Robinson well from their days in Jacksonville and helped shut him down last year when they squared off. Robinson is clearly the Bears’ biggest playmaker and Los Angeles would be wise to put its best defender on him.
5 What’s your prediction for Monday night?
Meg Oliphant/Getty Images
I think the Rams are going to come out with a better game plan offensively this week after a shaky performance against the 49ers. They don’t often lose two games in a row and I don’t expect them to here, either. They’ll pressure Foles into some mistakes and handle the Bears’ offense, while also getting the rushing attack going to balance out the offense. I’ll say the Rams win 24-20.
