The Kansas City Chiefs are getting ready to face the New York Jets at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 8. This marks the 40th time these teams have met in their history.

To learn more about Kansas City’s opponent, we spoke with managing editor Gary Phillips over at Jets Wire and asked him a few questions.

Chiefs Wire: Chiefs players and coaches say the Jets aren’t as bad as their record says they are. What do you say?

Chris Pedota – NorthJersey.com

Gary Phillips: I say the Chiefs are a bunch of polite liars. That, or they’re paying very little attention. To be fair, why would they? If anything, the Jets are worse than their record says they are, which is quite stunning considering they’re 0-7. But teams can be occasionally competitive despite not winning. The Jets have failed to resemble any such thing this season for more than a quarter at a time.

Chiefs Wire Do you think that Sam Darnold is still the QB of the future for New York?

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Gary Phillips: Do I think he’s capable of it? I’m not sure. It’s hard to fairly evaluate Darnold considering the D-list supporting cast he’s had around him throughout his three-year career. That said, Darnold looks like he’s regressed this year, and he’s still making lots of bad decisions on his own. As for your actual question: Do I think Darnold will be the future QB in New York? Not a chance if the Jets get the No. 1 pick. At this point, they will move on to ruining Trevor Lawrence.

Chiefs Wire: Now that Jamal Adams is gone, who is the face of the Jets defense?

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Gary Phillips: Gregg Williams? Quinnen Williams? Marcus Maye in a contract year? Social distancing? No one has been all that good (Q. Williams has looked the best), and neither has the unit as a whole, though there have been some improvements over the last two weeks.

Chiefs Wire: Do you expect the Jets to make any more trades ahead of the trade deadline?

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Gary Phillips: I mean, it sure would be silly of them not to. As bad as the Jets are, they have a ton of pieces who could upgrade or at least add depth to contending rosters. Considering Joe Douglas loves to stock up on draft picks, even in the later rounds, he will likely be a seller in the coming days. Look for players like Avery Williamson – a veteran that Douglas inherited – to be on the move.

Chiefs Wire: I’m not going to torture you by asking for your prediction for this game. Instead, tell me this — If you were in charge, what would you do to fix the Jets?

Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports

Gary Phillips: If I were in charge of the Jets, that would mean I’m Christopher or Woody Johnson. So if the goal was to fix the team, I would simply sell it. That wouldn’t solve every issue – such as removing the head coach and adding talented players – but it would potentially get the organization on the right path.
