UTAH CO., Utah — A man was arrested for allegedly stealing over 3,000 feet of insulated wire from power lines in Leamington, Utah.

The man who was arrested was 34-year-old Travis Jon Klett from Springville. He had previously stolen wire from Union Pacific Railroad in February 2019, according to arrest documents.

Early last week, it was discovered that over 5,000 feet of wire was taken from power lines near Mile Marker 673.5 of the Shafter Sub in Leamington. The missing wire caused a power fail at a nearby control station and all train traffic had to be halted in order to avoid a collision.

Officers learned that Klett had recycled 94 pounds of wire at MCR Recycling in Orem. He received $145.70 for the wire.

The next day, Klett returned to the recycling location with 184 pounds of wire and got $285.20.

Officers were able to obtain the receipt for the transactions that identified Klett and security video of him unloading wire from his truck.

Photos of the wire donated matched the type of wire that was stolen and Klett was taken into police custody.
