Browns vs. Bengals: Behind enemy lines with Browns Wire - Bengals Wire

The Cincinnati Bengals meet the Cleveland Browns again in Week 7 for the second Battle of Ohio this season and hope to avoid a season sweep.

Much has changed since their Week 2 matchup, as the Browns have been one of the NFL’s outright biggest surprises.

To get a better look at the matchup, we sat down with Jeff Risdon of Browns Wire.

Bengals Wire: How bad are the defensive woes after that 38-7 loss to Pittsburgh??

Browns Wire: Pittsburgh is really good, that must be stated first. They’re going to make better defenses than Cleveland’s look bad. But the Browns defense is not playing well at all right now.

Andrew Sendejo at safety has been a massive liability in coverage. He’s consistently late to diagnose and a step or two late to the party. The pass rush outside of Myles Garrett did nothing last week and that helped expose the coverage problems. Denzel Ward has been very good all season until last week, and really Terrance Mitchell at the other CB spot had been much better than he showed in Pittsburgh.

Guys like Mitchell, Ronnie Harrison (back this week after missing last week) at safety and slot CB Kevin Johnson are going to need to be sharp.

Bengals Wire: Is there an underrated player not getting enough attention with all eyes on Baker and Odell?

Browns Wire: I’d go with Wyatt Teller but he’s out. Joel Bitonio has been his typical Pro Bowl-caliber self at left guard and he never gets enough attention. Special teams ace Tavierre Thomas is playing fantastic on coverage units and he hasn’t been half-bad at cornerback either. There’s not a better punt coverage player in the league this year.

Bengals Wire: Should anything about this struggling Bengals team scare the Browns?

Browns Wire: I know the Bengals pass defense has looked rough but guys like Jessie Bates, William Jackson and Darius Phillips are capable of making plays if Mayfield isn’t sharp. If Carl Lawson can win battles against rookie LT Jedrick Wills–who has sputtered with speed rushers–there will be opportunities for the Bengals secondary to have a get-right game.

Bengals Wire: How do you see this one playing out?

Browns Wire: I think the Browns’ strengths from the first meeting are going to make things very difficult for the Bengals in the rematch. I expect another dominant performance from Myles Garrett, a strong showing from the Browns run game and play-action passing, and a focused team coming off a blowout loss. The Bengals should hit a couple of long scoring drives but I don’t think they can match the Browns.
