LSU will once again start sophomore Cameron Wire at left in place of Dare Rosenthal this season as the Tigers readied for South Carolina without Rosenthal taking part in warmups inside Tiger Stadium.
Rosenthal did not play against Vanderbilt due to injury, but Rosenthal's absence for LSU's fourth game of the year is not believed to be due to injury. Wire's played in all three games this season.
With a new starter at quarterback, LSU will need its offensive line to be strong against the Gamecocks, and that starts with a good running game.
"It's really important this game and any game for us to get the running game going," head coach Ed Orgeron said this week. "That's going to set up the pass. We cannot be one-dimensional. We have to be able to block better up front. We have to be able to run the football better in order to not get behind on second and 10, third and 10. We have to get in manageable."
As LSU gets ready to start its first true freshman at quarterback at home since 1995 in TJ Finley with Max Johnson expected to make an appearance, players expressed confidence in either one of the signal callers. Starting quarterback Myles Brennan is out with a significant lower body injury, which was suffered against Missouri.
"Working out with Max, he's very athletic as a whole. TJ, he has a really big arm," linebacker Jabril Cox said on Tuesday. "They're two very well-developed freshmen quarterbacks that I think if Myles, if he's not able to play, can go in and help us get a win so regardless of the QB situation, I think Max and TJ, they're ready."
After a 1-2 start and unexpected bye week, LSU's had plenty of time to work on itself and Orgeron is hopeful the Tigers come out with a renewed sense of energy as they look to climb back into the SEC race.
"I think we need to play with a lot of energy. I think we should be rested. I told the guys last week, press the restart button, let's go," Orgeron said on Monday. "Started today with a positive mindset with our coaching staff, a positive mindset to win the football game. Let's coach every day. Let's do our best job coaching. I'm going to ask our players, Listen, I asked the coach to give us their very best. Let's give our very best in practice. When you go back, don't play well, you got to look at your practices. We've been up and down in practice.
"Last week we put three practices together. Great practice. This week we got to put four leading to up game. I think it's not more or less being fired up on Saturday, but about being fired up today, getting better today. We got a lot of improving to do on LSU, not on South Carolina, on LSU."
Kickoff from Baton Rouge is set for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN.
