The Cincinnati Bengals host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday before looking ahead to a much-needed bye week.
Those Titans are one of the NFL’s best and sport some strengths where the Bengals have issues, making for a rough-looking AFC matchup.
To get a better look at the matchup, we sat down with Mike Moraitis of Titans Wire.
Bengals Wire: Tennessee is undefeated when Derrick Henry rushes for 100 yards. How has Ryan Tannehill done in games where Henry doesn’t hit that benchmark?
(Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports)
Titans Wire: Dating back to Week 7 of last season when Tannehill became the starter, the Titans are 4-3 when Henry doesn’t rush for 100 yards. This season, the Titans have won two of the three games that Henry hasn’t broken the century mark, and Tannehill has completed 75 percent of his passes for 434 passing yards and eight total touchdowns to zero picks in those two wins. Even when Henry ran for 212 yards in the Week 6 win, the Titans needed Tannehill to drive them down the field to tie the game at the end of regulation, which he did. I think more so than last year, Tannehill has proven he can put this team on his back when Henry doesn’t have a great game.
Bengals Wire: What steps are the Titans taking to fix the struggling third-down defense?

Titans Wire: There isn’t really much they can do right now other than to simply play better in those situations. It’s important to note that the defense hasn’t had its No. 1 corner, Adoree’ Jackson, the entire season, so I think the boost he can provide to to the team’s horrid coverage to start the season will help the cause.
Bengals Wire: On a former-Bengals slant, how has old friend Johnathan Joseph been doing?

Titans Wire: Joseph been pressed into more action than the Titans had planned when they signed him because of injuries to the secondary. He has certainly had his ups and downs and isn’t the same corner he once was, but overall I think he’s been pretty decent for a 36-year-old corner. Giving up big gains has been a problem, but opposing quarterbacks have an under 50 percent completion rate when throwing the ball into his coverage, and, believe it or not, he recently made Pro Football Focus’ list of the top-25 cornerbacks after seven weeks.
Bengals Wire: What is one weakness the struggling Bengals could exploit to keep this one somewhat competitive?

Titans Wire: The Bengals definitely want to attack this secondary. The Titans own a bottom-10 pass defense and will be without rookie corner Kristian Fulton, and quite possibly Adoree’ Jackson, their No. 1 corner, again. Teams have had success going after Malcolm Butler, who is supposed to be the No. 1 guy when Jackson is sidelined.
Bengals Wire: Who are underrated players on both sides of the football Bengals fans should know going into this one?

Titans Wire: I’m not sure how underrated he is anymore, but defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons is the Titans’ best defender and is becoming a star. The man is just a beast upfront and needs to be double-teamed or else there’s going to be a problem; he’s too strong to take one-on-one in most situations. On offense, watch out for Jonnu Smith, who probably doesn’t get enough attention league-wide. I believe he has the skills to be an elite tight end, as he’s a freak athlete who lines up all over the field and is a big play waiting to happen. Smith is due for a big game after two lackluster ones in a row, also.
Bengals Wire: How do you see this game playing out?

Titans Wire: Joe Burrow is going to be able to move the ball and score some points on the Titans’ defense, but I just don’t see the Bengals’ defense being able to do enough to stop the Titans’ offense from out-scoring Cincinnati. However, I do have enough respect for this Bengals team to think that this game remains close until late when the Titans pull away. Ryan Tannehill has another impressive game, Derrick Henry runs wild, and the Titans notch their sixth win of the season. Titans 34, Bengals 24
