Whilst the overall ELMS title was won with a round remaining after an extraordinary run of success from the #22 United Autosports Oreca duo of Phil Hanson and Filipe Albuquerque there is still a lot to play for the weekend as the Series reaches the finale of the delayed and shortened 2020 season at Portimao with a 36 car entry.

Depending on the way the race goes it could see united Autosports claim a third and fourth auto Le Mans entry for 2021 after their ELMS and Le Mans wins, or there could be either other returning or new teams on the auto entry roster.

In LMP2 its all about who takes the race win, and who grabs second in the Championship – together with the automatic entry that goes with it – a mark that four cars and crews can hit.

After winning the opening race of the season at Le Castellet and with a 57 point total bolstered by a second place in Monza last time out in Italy earlier this month, the #32 United Autosports Oreca of Alex Brundle, Will Owen and Job Van Uitert and Will Owen holds a healthy 20 point advantage over their nearest rivals for second spot in the points – with 26 still up for grabs – a win of course would seal the deal.

Next up are both the #39 Graff and the #31 Panis Racing Orecas, both on 37 points.

And they are just one point ahead of the #26 G-Drive Racing Aurus. The second invitation to Le Mans will be between these four cars in Portimão.

Don’t discount either the potential charge from the local heroes, Algarve Pro Racing – their pace has been strong all year, and this is a circuit that the team know very well indeed, could they be a factor in where the points go on Sunday afternoon?

LMP3

United Autosports are in the lead in this class too but their #2 Ligier of with all British crew Wayne Boyd, Tom Gamble and Rob Wheldon have work to do in Portugal.

A DNF in the Le Castellet 240 and a third place finish in Monza sees the gap well within reach in a class that has several strong contenders.

For the title, the current main challengers are the #13 Inter Europol Competition Ligier crew, full season driver Martin Hippe joins for the second time in the season by Dino Lunardi, the pair fresh from a valuable win at Monza that sees the points gap at just ten.

The #8 Realteam Racing Ligier of David Droux and Esteban Garcia took a win in Round 3 at Le Castellet and are currently 3rd with 50 points, 18 off the Championship leaders.

Reigning champions Eurointernational meanwhile still have a mathematical chance of retaining their title in 2020, the #11 Ligier currently on 47 points in 4th place, 21 behind the leaders with 26 points on offer in Portugal.

LMGTE

There are three games in play in LM GTE at Portimao – The title, the race win and second in the Championship again a mark that attracts an auto Le Mans invitation.

The title will be decided between the #74 Kessel Racing Ferrari 488 GTE EVO and the #77 Proton Competition Porsche 911 RSR.

After claiming their second win of the season in Monza, Michael Broniszewski, Nicola Cadei and David Perel have opened up a 7-point lead in the #74 Ferrari (81pts) over the #77 Porsche of Christian Ried, Michele Beretta and Alessio Picariello (74pts).

Roll in the incentive of gaining second place in the Championship and the all female crewed #83 Iron Lynx Ferrari of Rahel Frey, Michelle Gatting and Manuela Gostner still has a chance of claiming that prize.

The #83 crew are on 53 points, 21 points behind the #77 Proton Competition Porsche, with the #55 Spirit of Race Ferrari of Matt Griffin, Aaron Scott and Duncan Cameron just 1 point behind the #83 Ferrari in 4th on 52 points.

The LMGTE grid has been bolstered by two extra entries from the FIA WEC with the #86 Gulf Racing Porsche 911 RSR of Michael Wainwright, Ben Barker and Andrew Watson and the #88 AF Corse Ferrari of Emmanuel Collard, François Perrodo and Alessio Rovera.
