First direct comparison of PS5 and Xbox Series X says ... it’s close! - Polygon

PlayStation 5 versus Xbox Series X. In a head-to-head comparison, it mostly comes down to frame rate.

Digital Foundry delivers the first direct comparison of the new console generation, using Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition. It’s helpful that you also have a comparison to the Xbox One/PlayStation 4 console generation, as well.

The tl;dr — average framerates are comparable, both over 100 frames per second, with DMC 5:SE. In gameplay, though, the Xbox Series X is more prone to performance drops. “When the Xbox [frame rate] is dipping hard, it’s dips harder,” says Digital Foundry’s Richard Ledbetter, “and it seems to have an advantage in more select areas and in gameplays, whereas in gameplay, which is kind of the more crucial part of the equation, it’s the PlayStation 5 that has the advantage.”

Then they get into ray-tracing, the it-technology of the new generation. Bottom line, both units handle its processing about the same way. I can’t get over how everything comes back to “slight advantage” here. “The experience is sort of broadly comparable,” Ledbetter admits. Well, there you go.

These kinds of direct-compare videos are fun in their own way — who doesn’t love car porn, or baseball analytics, after all? But also, part of the fun of car porn is pushing something beyond its limits, right? And both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 handle Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition with aplomb. So who knows when, if ever, we can determine which one is better?

This is all a long-winded way of saying: Enjoy your new console, everyone; it’s a great choice.
