The Jacksonville Jaguars will be returning to TIAA Bank Field for the first time since their Week 3 loss to the Miami Dolphins. This time around, it will be against the Detroit Lions, who aren’t having a good season either. However, that doesn’t mean it will translate to a win for the Cardiac Cats.
To get a little more information on the 1-3 Lions, we sat down with Jeff Risdon of the Lions Wire to discuss how the Lions’ season has gone. Here are five burning questions he was kind enough to answer:
Jeff Risdon: It seems very unlikely. The Lions are coming off a bye week and that was the obvious time to make a move. He’s still very much on the hot seat for the long-term though. Losing to a team with the national perception like the Jaguars, with just one win, would certainly not help Patricia’s case.
JR: Stafford is not having his best season, not like he was in 2019 before he got hurt. But Stafford is still playing well enough for the Lions to win games. The rocket right arm is still there and he’s flashed enough mobility that there aren’t really any worries about his back injuries.
The pinpoint accuracy has been just a little off. It’s still better than a lot of quarterbacks. Detroit’s receivers do a terrible job of getting separation against man coverage and that requires Stafford to be almost perfect on every throw. He’s human.
JR: Detroit’s defense has been dreadful. It’s a passive scheme that doesn’t generate pressure on the quarterback and it’s not working. Opposing offenses have had it too easy and the Lions’ defense doesn’t have enough difference-makers to stop teams without better schematic help. Linebacker play has been very disappointing.
The offense has sputtered in the red zone, an ongoing issue for the team. Instead of cashing in for touchdowns, the Lions too often settle for field goals or turn the ball over. Kicker Matt Prater has also not had a great season and that exacerbates the problem.
JR: If a first-round pick from 2019 can be under the radar, tight end T.J. Hockenson is an easy choice here. He leads the Lions in targets, catches and TDs and he’s playing very well in his second season.
Going a little deeper, cornerback Amani Oruwariye is a player who most folks don’t know about. He’s probably going to start in place of Desmond Trufant (injured) but probably should anyway because he’s better. He’s the best tackler on the defense and his ability to click and close on the ball in the air makes him dangerous if Minshew hangs a throw.
JR: I get the sense that both teams feel really good about their chances and I understand why. The Jaguars should be able to run the ball at will and that shortens the game for their bad pass defense. The Lions should be able to attack down the field and score enough that their bad defense won’t have to make a game-saving stop.
I think the Lions sneak out with the close win on a long Matt Prater field goal. He’s better from beyond 50 than he is from 40-50 yards and I can see him nailing a walk-off 56 yarder to give the Lions a 29-27 win.
