The Daily Chop: The Braves hit the waiver wire plus more player reviews - Talking Chop

susilangs.blogspot.com

Hey, not every offseason roster move that brings in a player from outside the organization is a game-changer.

The Braves have sort of made a name for themselves in terms of finding value on waiver wire and free agent market the last few years, in particular with bats while the pitching selections have been more....iffy.

Fortunately, the Braves did, in fact, pick up a bat on Friday as they snagged utility infielder Jack Mayfield off of the waiver wire from the Houston Astros. Mayfield doesn’t really profile as an everyday player, but with guys like Charlie Culberson and Adeiny Hechavarria seemingly headed elsewhere for 2021, it is hardly a surprise to see the Braves grab a guy with some positional versatility and defensive ability as a potential bench piece. Mayfield also showed a little bit of power in the high minors, so there is maybe a little bit of upside here as well. Plus, this move in particular could make the Braves’ decision regarding Johan Camargo and the non-tender deadline a little more interesting.

Nationals emerge as suitors for LeMahieu

Oh good, another NL East team that is looking to add another MVP contender. The Nationals are at it again as they are looking hard at acquiring DJ LeMahieu from the free agent market. It looks like its going to be more than the Mets that are going to be playing in the deep end of the free agent pool this offseason.

Rays DFA Renfroe amid roster moves

One of the benefits of having a guy like Randy Arozarena breaking out the way that he did is that it allows a cash-strapped team like the Rays to cut roster fat and save a little bit of money while also creating their optimal lineup. It looks like that is what happened as Hunter Renfroe was DFAed after what was a truly badly 2020.
