ST. BONAVENTURE, NY — The university is sending home students who have been in direct contact with individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19.

“The decision was made in the best interest of students,” St. Bonaventure President Dr. Dennis DePerro said. “The potential for the university and the county to have to tend to the needs of dozens of students in quarantine over break would not have been prudent when they will be able to receive better care in quarantine at home.”

According to an email from the SBU Office of Marketing and Communications, students who have been in direct contact with individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 will complete their quarantines at home as long as they are asymptomatic. Students who had been in quarantine prior to Nov. 10 will complete their quarantines on campus or in their off-campus residence.

The university’s fall calendar calls for in-person classes to end on Nov. 24, followed by a week of online instruction and a week for exams.

“The university has experienced a slight uptick in cases over the last 10 days, but that’s reflective of a surging trend in the county and state,” DePerro said. “However, we’ve still had fewer than three dozen cases since Aug. 1 and remain optimistic we will be able to finish in session on Nov. 24.”

The university has reported eight new coronavirus cases over the past three days, according to New York State data

Four of the new cases were confirmed on Friday; one was confirmed on Saturday, and three on Sunday. The university has reported a total of 35 cases since Aug. 1. Eleven cases are active; 24 individuals have recovered from the virus.

Additionally, 45 students are quarantined, and nine are isolated (three on campus, six off campus). Of the university’s 52 on-campus quarantine rooms, 26 are occupied.

St. Bonaventure developed the quarantine policy in collaboration with the Cattaraugus County Health Department. The university’s email also included the following details:

“Contact information will be shared with a student’s home county so health officials there can follow up with students to ensure that quarantine protocols are being followed. Students asked to quarantine at home should reach out to their instructors.

“Direct contacts who present symptoms at the time they are asked to quarantine will be placed in quarantine on campus if they are residential or in their off-campus residences. Those symptomatic students will be required to be tested. If those test results are negative, they will be asked to leave campus or their off-campus residences to complete their quarantine at home.”
