Day in contention

Jason Day was back in contention on the eve of the Masters after two eventful days alongside Phil Mickelson. Winless in 21/2 years and fighting lingering back and neck problems, Day shot a 2-under-par 68 on Friday in the Houston Open to pull within two strokes of second-round leader Sam Burns at difficult Memorial Park. The Australian watched the 50-year-old Michelson hit into the water twice en route to an 8 on the par-3 ninth, then hole out from 193 yards for eagle on the par-4 18th. Mickelson missed the cut, following an opening 76 with a 73. Day had three birdies and a bogey. Burns birdied all three par-5 holes in a bogey-free 65 to reach 7 under. Carlos Ortiz of Mexico had a 68 to match Day at 5 under. Austin Cook (Jonesboro, Arkansas Razorbacks) shot a 72, while Andrew Landry (Razorbacks) had a 77.

Goydos, Jobe share lead

Paul Goydos and Brandt Jobe each shot 7-under 64 in calm, overcast conditions to share the first-round lead in the PGA Tour Champions' Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix. The tournament is the final official event of the year, but not the season as in the past. Because of the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent loss of tournaments, the 2020 and 2021 seasons have been combined with the Schwab Cup winner to be determined in a year. Goydos, 56, birdied the par-5 18th in a bogey-free round at Phoenix Country Club. Jobe, 55, also birdied the 18th in a bogey-free round on the tree-lined course near downtown. K.J. Choi was a stroke back with Mark Brooks and Kevin Sutherland. Glen Day (Little Rock) and Ken Duke (Arkadelphia, Henderson State) each shot a 69. John Daly (Dardanelle, Arkansas Razorbacks) had a 70.

Donaldson setting pace

The 32-player field for the third round of the Cyprus Showdown will be determined today after play was suspended because of darkness on the second day of the European Tour event in Paphos, Cyprus. Jamie Donaldson, the 2014 Ryder Cup star who held the 54-hole lead at the Cyprus Open on the same course last week, was the leading scorer Friday at 12-under par with three holes to play. The Welshman was 7 under for his second round and was one of 30 players still to finish. James Morrison (63) of England and Johannes Veerman (64) of the United States set the clubhouse target of 11 under par at Aphrodite Hills Resort. Play was suspended for more than an hour and a half early in the afternoon because of thunderstorms. After the restart, darkness halted play.

Kinhult earns LPGA card

Frida Kinhult of Sweden won the Symetra Tour Championship in Davidson, N.C., for her first professional victory and a spot on the LPGA Tour next season. Kinhult closed with a 2-under 70 at River Run Country Club for a four-stroke victory. The former Florida State player, who played in the 2019 Arnold Palmer Cup at The Alotian Club in Roland, finished at 10-under 278. Kinhult earned $26,250 to finish fourth in the race for five LPGA Tour cards. The top five also earned spots in the U.S. Women's Open next month in Houston. Ana Belac of Slovenia, who also played in the Arnold Palmer Cup last year, topped the money list with $49,081. Demi Runas was second in the tournament after a 66. Sierra Brooks was third at 4 under after a 70.

BASEBALL

No discipline for Turner

Justin Turner will not be disciplined by Major League Baseball for coming onto the field last week to celebrate the World Series title with his Los Angeles Dodgers teammates after testing positive for covid-19. The third baseman was removed after seven innings of Game 6 against Tampa Bay on Oct. 27 after MLB informed the Dodgers of the test result, which was received during the sixth inning. He returned to the field after Los Angeles won 3-1 to earn the title, took off his mask and posed for a photograph with teammates. Turner said he watched the final two innings with his wife Kourtney in a doctor's office in the clubhouse and he assumed there was no objection by Dodgers officials to his returning to the field. He also said that when he returned to the field, he thought few people would be there and his plan was to take a quick photo with his wife. Turner, 35, became MLB's first player to test positive in 59 days.

FOOTBALL

Arizona-Utah canceled

The Pac-12 football season is getting off to a shaky start. The opener between Utah and Arizona, which was scheduled for today in Salt Lake City, was canceled due to a rise in positive covid-19 cases within the Utes program. Utah Athletic Director Mark Harlan said a number of positive coronavirus tests Friday morning put Utah below the Pac-12's minimum threshold of 53 available scholarship players under the conference's game cancellation policy. The Pac-12 approved the request on Friday. The cancellation is the second in two days for the Pac-12, which is set to kick off its seven-game season this weekend after spending the past several weeks watching as other conferences began playing. The game between Washington California was canceled Thursday. Games between Arizona State and No. 20 Southern California, UCLA and Colorado, Washington State and Oregon State, along with Stanford at No. 12 Oregon are still scheduled to be played today. In all, 10 Bowl Subdivision games this week were either canceled or postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic, bringing the total to 47 since Aug. 26.

Source: Steelers fined

Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin was fined $100,000 and the club $250,000 because coaches improperly wore facial coverings last Sunday, a person with knowledge of the fines told The Associated Press on Friday. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the fines have not been announced, said Tomlin was among the coaches cited for "not wearing face coverings at all times on the sidelines" during the victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The league has been clamping down on violators of sideline protocols designed to battle covid-19. The NFL recently told its 32 teams to have all personnel wear masks in lockers rooms and on the sideline when not in the game. Players are required to wear masks during postgame contacts with opponents as well.
