Each week of the NFL season, we will identify fantasy football waiver-wire pickups specifically for those of you looking for streaming options in deeper formats (including IDP leagues). These are players available in a majority of ESPN Fantasy leagues who have enticing matchups in the week ahead that make them worthy of consideration for your lineup.
While you might notice some overlap with Field Yates' pickup column that publishes on Mondays, an important distinction is that the options mentioned in this column are focused solely on this week's matchup and not the players' values for the remainder of the season.
Do you need replacement options for injured players or those on a bye week? Or are you merely dealing with depth issues? A roundtable of fantasy analysts and NFL Nation reporters will join me to identify some choice names to consider each week.
Here are some of our favorites for Week 9:
Quarterback
Drew Lock, Denver Broncos (6.2% rostered; at Falcons)
You can arguably write off the first half of the season for Lock, as he missed most of four games because of injury, then faced challenging defenses (NE, KC) before finally busting loose with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter Sunday against the Chargers. Now, he faces the uber-porous Falcons secondary, which has allowed the most fantasy points per game to opposing QBs. The table is set for him to come through as a viable QB2 with upside in Week 9. -Tom Carpenter, ESPN Fantasy editor
Running back
Damien Harris, New England Patriots (45.3% rostered; at Jets)
There is a surprising amount of decent RBs to choose from this week. But I was already leaning toward Harris over rookies J.K. Dobbins and Zack Moss even before I looked at their Week 9 matchups. (Harris gets the hapless Jets, while Dobbins faces the stifling Colts run defense). The rookies may have higher ceilings, but both of them are still stuck in time-shares that should continue according to ESPN's Ravens and Bills reporters Jamison Hensley and Marcel Louis-Jacques. Meanwhile, Patriots reporter Mike Reiss said he would buy into the kind of usage we saw from Harris on Sunday (16 carries for 102 yards and a TD) since New England has become so reliant on its run game. Obviously the Patriots like to turn to RBs like James White and Rex Burkhead more in the passing game, but they should be able to stick with the run against the Jets instead of having to play catch-up. -Mike Triplett, NFL Nation Saints reporter
Zack Moss, Buffalo Bills (42.6% rostered; vs. Seahawks)
Moss is coming off the best game of his career Sunday, rushing for 81 yards and two touchdowns against the Patriots. His rookie season has been marred by injuries thus far, but Moss' touches have increased from five, to 10, to now 14 in his three games since returning to the field, and he has seemingly been the better goal-line option for the Bills all season with three touchdowns (in five games) versus only one for Devin Singletary. -André Snellings, ESPN Senior Writer
Wide receiver
Randall Cobb, Houston Texans (18.8% rostered; at Jaguars)
The Jaguars rank last in the league in creating pressure on opposing passers, a fact that should help Deshaun Watson work from a clean pocket and feed Cobb with high-percentage targets out of the slot. Cobb's market share has proven stronger since the team underwent a coaching shift, thus he's in a solid spot to return value heading into this division matchup. -Jim McCormick
Darnell Mooney, Chicago Bears (6.2% rostered; at Titans)
The rookie WR, who caught five of six targets for 69 yards and a score in Week 8, has now seen a total of 23 targets in his past four games. While the inconsistent play of quarterback Nick Foles has to be accounted for here, Bears head coach Matt Nagy will scheme vertical throws for Mooney off play-action. And Chicago gets a Tennessee defense this week that has really struggled to generate a consistent pass rush this season. -Matt Bowen, NFL writer and analyst
Tight end
Logan Thomas, Washington Football Team (11.8% rostered; vs. Giants)
This former quarterback is quietly finding success as the move tight end for Washington this season. Consider that Thomas has netted at least four targets in each game this season and has scored in consecutive outings. The Giants have been respectable against tight ends in coverage, but Thomas can still exceed his projection this week given such a consistent slice of the passing offense. -J.M.
Robert Tonyan, Green Bay Packers (56.8% rostered; at 49ers)
It took me a while to buy into Tonyan as a legitimate weekly play (and obviously I'm not alone based on his roster percentage in ESPN leagues). But he had another five catches for 79 yards on seven targets in Week 8. And ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky said Tonyan has "clearly gained the trust of Aaron Rodgers as his second option behind Davante Adams" (at least until Allen Lazard comes back). Demovsky pointed out that injuries are the main reason the third-year pro didn't break out sooner. With the TE position getting even thinner with George Kittle's injury, Tonyan should be a popular replacement option this week. -Triplett
Defense/special teams (D/ST)
Green Bay Packers (19.1% rostered; at 49ers)
I'm breaking away from the normal path this week and picking up a defense that has scored a whopping three fantasy points in the three weeks following its bye. No, it's not an acquisition for the conservative, but the Packers boast a top-10 blitz rate and get backup quarterbacks in each of the next two weeks. That's tough to argue with, not to mention the following two opponents are the Colts and Bears, two offenses that can be had. I like the Packers against the Niners on the short workweek and believe they can help you make a playoff push. -Kyle Soppe, ESPN Fantasy researcher
New York Giants (16.6% rostered; at Washington Football Team)
The Giants defense has been quietly solid this season, especially against their NFC East rivals. In three division contests, the Giants are averaging double-digit fantasy points, including producing three sacks, an interception, fumble recovery and a touchdown against Sunday's opponent, the Washington Football Team, just three weeks ago. -Snellings
Individual defensive players (IDP)
Defensive Line
Carlos Dunlap, Seattle Seahawks (9.9% rostered; at Bills)
An ugly ending in Cincinnati could lead to a promising debut with the Seahawks for Dunlap, as he will be tasked with working the edge against a Bills offense allowing the ninth-highest pressure rate in the league to opposing defenses. -J.M.
Linebacker
Tyrell Adams, Houston Texans (10.3% rostered; at Jaguars)
Investing in defenders fresh from their bye week can prove profitable, as good players often hit free agency simply based on a roster crunch. Adams posted 31 tackles and a sack in three games leading into the team's recent bye and should continue in an every-down role for the team in this meeting with the Jaguars. -J.M.
Defensive back
Kareem Jackson, Denver Broncos (12.2% rostered; at Falcons)
With only two games this season with fewer than six tackles and fresh from a season-high 12 tackles on Sunday, Jackson should again prove busy patrolling the passing and rushing lanes against the Falcons in Week 9.-J.M.
