There are a few tight ends widely available that either have good matchups heading into Week 9, or had successful Week 8 performances, or could benefit from an injury. With that in mind, here are five tight ends with under 50% rostership in traditional fantasy football leagues that managers can consider picking up for Week 9.
Week 9 byes: Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, Philadelphia Eagles
Drew Sample, Austin Hooper, Tyler Higbee, and Dallas Goedert will not be available.
Next up — BYE, @NYG, @CLE, SEA, @GB
Goedert returned from injury in Week 8 and will now have a chance to thrive at tight end without Zach Ertz in the picture. Goedert has a bye in Week 9, but was a top 10 tight end while playing alongside Ertz in 2019. Injuries to Miles Sanders, Alshon Jeffery, and DeSean Jackson make Goedert very important. Richard Rogers was able to produce at a high level as a fill-in and Goedert should be able to return to form in time.
Next up — NYG, @DET, CIN, @DAL, @PIT
Thomas is a top 20 tight end in standard and PPR leagues. He’s second only to Terry McLaurin in receiving yards (208) and leads Washington in touchdown catches (3). Thomas has found the end zone in two straight games and is one of the only reliable pass catchers Washington has.
Next up — @SF, JAX, @IND, CHI, PHI
Tonyan has tapered off since catching three touchdowns against the Atlanta Falcons but remains a top five tight end in standard and PPR leagues. He doesn’t get the targets elite tight ends do but makes the most of the opportunities he does get. He tallied a season-high seven targets in his last outing.
Next up — PIT, BYE, @MIN, WAS, @BAL
It’s hard to trust any Cowboys given how bad they’ve looked on offense but Shultz hasn’t been bad since Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending leg injury. Schultz has tallied 12 catches for 110 yards in his last three games. Only Amari Cooper has more receiving yards than Schultz over the last three weeks and the tight end could become more of a weapon on short throws because of Dallas’s shaky passing attack.
Next up — BAL, @TEN, GB, TEN, @HOU
Alie-Cox led all tight ends in receiving yards with 37 on three catches when he returned from injury in Week 8. Jack Doyle and Trey Burton both scored touchdowns and took away from Alie-Cox’s performance. Cox has been a favorite red zone target of Philip Rivers and could rise back to prominence despite the abundance of talent at his position.
