Patty Jenkins has revealed her interest in directing movies about other superheroes, including Spider-Man and Black Widow. The writer-director is probably best known for helming 2017’s Wonder Woman and its sequel Wonder Woman 1984, which has valiantly battled several delays due to the pandemic and finally been released in the US to generally positive reviews on Christmas Day. Jenkins is clearly a darling of the DCEU, as just two days after Wonder Woman 1984’s release, Warner Bros. officially announced she will be returning (along with Gal Gadot) to make Wonder Woman 3, finishing off a “long-planned theatrical trilogy.”
However, Wonder Woman 3 isn’t the only upcoming blockbuster Jenkins is slated to direct. Her next release will be Cleopatra, a modern adaptation of the famous historical figure’s life that will see Jenkins reunited with Gadot once again as she stars in the titular role, despite some controversy surrounding her casting and whitewashing. Disney also recently announced that Jenkins will be directing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, which is currently in development and is expected to release in 2023. It will be an original story and is set to be the first new Star Wars movie after 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Needless to say, Jenkins is going to be very busy for the foreseeable future, but that hasn’t stopped her from expressing interest in possibly taking on even more superhero movies. Answering a fan’s question on Twitter, Jenkins enthused about the chance to direct a superhero film outside the Wonder Woman trilogy, citing the “potential” of some other fan-favorite heroes. Check out the tweet below.
Even though she cites Superman as one of her three choices, it’s clear that Jenkins doesn’t feel tied down to the DCEU. If she was to helm a Spider-Man or a Black Widow movie, she would join a highly elite club with James Gunn, who is currently the only director to work in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC’s Extended Universe. That achievement, paired with the fact that she will be the first woman to helm a Star Wars film, would make her nothing short of a blockbuster legend.
While the upcoming Black Widow and Spider-Man movies both already have directors attached, it isn’t impossible that Jenkins could get a chance to play in the MCU. Jon Watts will return to complete his MCU Spidey trilogy with Tom Holland in Spider-Man 3, although it is worth noting that the future of Spider-Man in cinema is relatively unclear after that, especially with Spider-Man 3 expected to introduce the multiverse to the MCU. Black Widow has Cate Shortland as its director, and though it appears to be a stand-alone movie for the moment, a sequel with Florence Pugh’s Yelena as a new Black Widow could be on the cards – a sequel that Jenkins could direct.
Obviously, this is all just speculation, especially as Jenkins is already confirmed to be helming three major movies over the next few years. Though directing an MCU movie would be another impressive stone in her proverbial Infinity Gauntlet, Patty Jenkins’s success with Wonder Woman has proved her a blockbuster legend already.
