On Feb. 17, Nintendo Direct dropped a ton of news about the company’s upcoming content. If you’re a Nintendo Switch owner, here are the five biggest announcements to know.
The entire hour-long presentation can also be viewed here.
Project Triangle Strategy is a tactical JRPG reminiscent of Octopath Traveler
Project Triangle Strategy is the code name for an upcoming JRPG published by Square Enix. It also looks suspiciously similar to Octopath Traveler, the critically acclaimed title that is also a JRPG from Square Enix that also features a similar 2D-3D hybrid art style.
Even if Triangle Strategy isn’t a direct sequel to Octopath Traveler, it’s certainly deeply influenced by it. The game features all the turn-based tactical goodness and charm that has traditionally defined old school Japanese RPGs.
Keep an eye on this one if you think games like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III (also known as Final Fantasy VI for the hardcore fans out there) are still the best RPGs of all time.
Project Triangle Strategy has a tentative 2022 release date.
Splatoon 3 is the next game in Nintendo’s best-selling shooter series
Splatoon is Nintendo’s homegrown shooter franchise. It’s also a series that is designed specifically with competitive play in mind, which might be why it’s the one esport that Nintendo has supported.
Splatoon 3 will be the newest entry into the franchise set in a vast, barren wasteland. It’s a bold choice given the series has a very cartoony, uplifting aesthetic. But knowing Nintendo, the change in scenery is probably going to come with some additional game mechanics.
The game will be released sometime in 2022, according to Splatoon 3’s announcement trailer.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is finally coming to Switch
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is the cutest and one of the most rage-inducing battle royales around. The game was a major hit on Twitch upon its release and led to some hilarious moments, such as Timothy “TimTheTatman” Betar’s infamous 600 match losing streak.
Now you can experience all the glory and pain of Fall Guys on the Nintendo Switch in Summer 2021.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is getting Mario-themed DLC
Animal Crossing x Super Mario is now officially a thing. Everyone knew this was bound to happen sooner or later — Nintendo owns both franchises, after all. Still, it’s a welcome addition.
The new Mario-themed DLC includes iconic items such as Mario and Luigi costumes, question blocks, warp pipes and more. All of it is part of Nintendo’s continuing Super Mario 35th anniversary celebration.
You can download the Animal Crossing x Mario DLC for free on Feb. 25.
Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is a remaster of the 2011 game for the Nintendo Switch
Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was originally released in 2011 for the Nintendo Wii. It has since been regarded as a flawed masterpiece. Skyward Sword eschewed the open-world design which has defined the franchise since Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in favor of a much more linear approach.
It was a controversial move that deeply divided the fan base, along with other mechanics such as the sometimes clunky motion controls and upgrade system. Nintendo took this criticism to heart when developing the next title Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which became a smash hit.
For this reason, Zelda fans have called Skyward Sword the game that walked so Breath of the Wild could run. Skyward Sword HD will feature a revamped control system and even new joycons modeled after Link’s trademark weapons, the Master Sword and the Hylian Shield.
Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD will release on July 16.
And that’s a wrap for the big five announcements from the Nintendo Direct announcement for Feb. Happy gaming!
