We asked Chiefs Kingdom to submit their best mock drafts over on the Chiefs Wire Twitter and Facebook pages this past Friday. Now, we have a much better idea of the types of players that Chiefs fans are hoping to land in the 2021 NFL draft.
A few things to keep in mind, we didn’t set any parameters for these mock drafts. Some will include trades, others compensatory pick projections. Before we take a look at several of these mock drafts, let’s take a look at what we can learn about Chiefs Kingdom’s thoughts on pick No. 31.
Pick No. 31 analysis
Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports
QB: 0 OT: 3 IOL: 4 RB: 0 TE: 0 WR: 1 DT: 0 EDGE: 0 LB: 1 CB: 1 S: 0The player that was sent to the Chiefs the most frequently in the first round was Texas OT Samuel Cosmi. Even in a few of the submissions that I didn’t choose for this article, Cosmi was the guy. Behind Cosmi, USC OL Alijah Vera-Tucker also received several submissions too.
It’s not a surprise seeing the majority of the first-round choices come at the offensive line. It was apparent during the Super Bowl that it was a huge weakness for Kansas City. Additionally, the only player that we can for sure say is going to be a starter in 2021 is Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who didn’t play in 2020 after opting out this season. The Chiefs have questions at basically every other position on the offensive line and fans want the draft to in part be the answer.
One thing that did surprise me a bit about the submissions— only one included a first-round edge rusher. For all the flack that Frank Clark gets and the expected departures of Alex Okafor and Tanoh Kpassagnon, you’d think that more people would be interested in helping out the pass rush early on in the draft. Some fans did address the position later on in their mock drafts, though.
Without any more delay, let’s take a look at some of these mock drafts. Oh and if your mock draft didn’t make it this week, keep your eyes out next week for another opportunity.
Zach The Layman’s Stan's Mock Draft
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Zach has the right idea here, investing in the offensive line to protect the team’s half-billion-dollar investment. The thing is, we know that Brett Veach and Andy Reid let guys get in there and compete regardless of draft round. Taking three offensive linemen back-to-back-to-back might not be the best use of resources. With that said, I really like the first two picks.
Vera-Tucker is listed as an interior offensive lineman, but he can probably play any spot on the line. Dickerson could be the best interior offensive lineman to come out of this draft class, but you have to be comfortable with his lengthy medical history. The rest of the draft does a good job of hitting on needs. I also feel like the Darden pick could turn out to be a sneaky-good choice.
VooDoo's mock draft
Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports
Cosmi is definitely the flavor of the month right now and I get it. He’s probably the most explosive athlete at the tackle position in this draft class. In fact, he kind of reminds me a bit of Eric Fisher when he was coming out back in 2013. He has the frame to add some more muscle and he’s going to need it for the NFL.
I don’t think that Cox will last to the bottom of the second round, but I wouldn’t be mad if he did. He’s someone who can play in your base 4-3 package and in your sub-package defense because he’s that athletic. He could replace Ben Niemann and Daniel Sorensen all-in-one. This draft is probably a bit too low on guys like Wade and Terry, but if you can get them there, it’d certainly be a good value.
Uncle Glenny's mock draft
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Uncle Glenny brings up a pretty great point here— the Chiefs’ draft decisions will be influenced by the choices they make in free agency. If they sign a tackle like Trent Williams in free agency, then it makes much more sense to go grab a mauler at left guard to pair with him in the first round.
Jordan would be a true No. 2 tight end to complement Travis Kelce. I’m a little hesitant on McGrone at this spot just because Dorian O’Daniel has been such a disappointment and they’re similarly undersized. The rest of the draft feels like a good combination of developmental talent with a quick turnaround time.
Jonathan Mejia's mock draft
Bryan Lynn-USA TODAY Sports
Another vote for Vera-Tucker in Round 1. I think that Melinfonwu is probably a better fit for a team that plays more Cover 3. Also, I’m not sure I’d be comfortable taking Odeyingbo in the third round. He tore his Achilles in pre-draft training, so you’re basically going to end up giving him a redshirt year in 2021.
I really like grabbing Cleveland in the fourth round, though. I was disappointed that injury knocked him out of the Senior Bowl because he’s a mauler in the run game and insanely strong. He’d be a great choice at left or right guard for Kansas City. I’m a fan of Terry too, but I think a team will take a chance on his size and athleticism on Day 2 of the draft.
Ron Tepper's mock draft
Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports
Our first draft submission with what appears to be multiple trade downs. I think the Chiefs are actually in a great spot to trade down and still grab a good player at the top of Round 2. The problem I have with trading down a whole bunch is that you’re still a team that went to back-to-back Super Bowls. You’re still a team with Patrick Mahomes. Undrafted free agents are going to flock to sign with your team, so making 12 picks just seems a bit overkill in the long run.
My favorite picks from this bunch are Meinerz and Smith. Both were standouts at the Senior Bowl and have a chance to be really good in the NFL. I feel like this is too low on both Rice and Hayes, but I wouldn’t complain if Kansas City got either at those spots.

Samuel Jr. feels like a pure best-player-available type of pick. Say the Broncos, Raiders or Chargers land another elite receiver and the Chiefs will feel a lot better knowing they have a loaded secondary. I also like the idea to double-dip at receiver and edge, especially with St. Brown being the pick at No. 63.
I think a lot of Chiefs fans would be mad to see the team wait until late Day 3 to draft some offensive tackles. Really it just depends on what they do in free agency, though. I think this is probably too low on Jaimes as he has some newfound hype after the Senior Bowl, but other than that it feels like a really solid draft.
Naman Nanda
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
Another Vera-Tucker pick in the first round. I think that Naman is going to be happy because I wouldn’t be shocked to see Moses fall. He was noticeably less explosive this season in his return from injury and I think teams are going to drop him a bit because of that.
Both Taylor Jr. and Schwartz will be great value picks for Kansas City at 136 and 144. I also agree that Toney is a great developmental option for the Chiefs to consider in this class. He’s on the slighter side, so maybe he’s SAM linebacker in Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme?
KD1320's mock draft
Brett Rojo-USA TODAY Sports
Jenkins would be a great choice for the Chiefs at No. 31 and I think he has a pretty good chance of being available there too. He’s one of those guys that coaches don’t have to scream “finish” at. He knows how to do it and he does it well. Grabbing Jenkins and Dickerson back-to-back would add some serious nasty to the Chiefs’ offensive line.
Landing Joseph in the third-round would be an absolute steal as he’s been getting some first-round buzz in NFL circles lately. I like Sterns and think he could be a good replacement option for Sorensen if the team were to move on from him. Golston at pick No. 180 would also be a pretty big steal given his size.

The issue with taking a linebacker in the first round is that you’re basically guaranteeing fewer snaps for Willie Gay Jr., the linebacker that you just invested a top 100 pick in last season. I get it, Bolton is a stud and a local one at that. The problem is that he just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for Kansas City right now. I’m not sure that I see any situation where he’s best player available at 31 either.
Odeyingbo at No. 63 is far too rich for my blood with his Achilles injury. I do like the Myers and Christensen picks. Those are both good players who could help anchor the offensive line for a long time. Fehoko, Blankenship and Bynum are a great trio of developmental types to finish off the draft too.
Joshua G. Foxworth's mock draft
This is one of the more bold drafts that we received as a submission. Really the first four picks feel a bit like a reach. I can’t say that I view Williams as a first-rounder, but if this your guy, you go and get him. I know that he’s got receiver skills and run-after-the-catch toughness more akin to a running back. That’s a skill set that could certainly thrive in the Chiefs’ offense. Overall this draft would leave many fans scratching their heads and anxious to see the players in action.
