ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in its first game since Jan. 21 as it earned a 62-49 Big Ten road victory over Purdue on Thursday night (Feb. 11) at Mackey Arena.
The Wolverines competed for the first time since Jan. 21 after going through a two-week department-wide pause in athletic activity due to COVID-19.
Juniors Leigha Brown and Naz Hillmon had 20-point games for Michigan (11-1, 6-1 Big Ten) with Hillmon scoring a team-best 21 points and Brown pouring in 20, 11 of which came from the charity stripe. Hillmon earned her ninth double-double this season, while Brown had her fifth 20-point game as a Wolverine. Graduate student Akienreh Johnson was big for the Maize and Blue with eight points and 12 rebounds to record her sixth career game with double-digit boards.
U-M forced the Boilermakers into 22 turnovers, which turned into 24 points, and added 10 steals -- four of which came from sophomore Maddie Nolan.
Hillmon pulled down 10 rebounds to notch her 28th career double-double. The Wolverines dominated the glass, outrebounding Purdue, 39-18.
Both teams had a slow start offensively before Michigan hit four of five shots to score its first eight points and take an 8-4 advantage over Purdue (6-10, 3-9 Big Ten). The Wolverines did not allow the Boilermakers to score until six minutes into the first quarter. U-M did not find a basket for the next four minutes before Hailey Brown and Leigha Brown each made a pair of free throws with under 10 seconds to play to give Michigan a 12-6 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Wolverines extended their lead to 10 when Amy Dilk made a pull-up jumper in the paint on a quick transition to pull the Maize and Blue up, 19-9, with 6:52 left in the first half. U-M settled in late in the second quarter, hitting its final five shots of the quarter to take a 31-24 advantage into the halftime break.
Leigha Brown led the Wolverines with 13 points, including six free throws, while Hillmon added 10 points, going 5-for-5 from the field.
The third quarter was one of runs, as Michigan scored the first nine points and Purdue ripped off an 11-0 run during the stanza as Michigan headed to the fourth with a 46-35 lead.
The Wolverines used six straight points in the fourth quarter, including a jumper from Hailey Brown followed by a Hillmon putback on the ensuing possession to take a 61-45 lead with 3:16 remaining.
Michigan gave up just four more points over the final three minutes to secure the 62-49 road victory.
The Wolverines will return to action Thursday, Feb. 18, when they take on Indiana in Bloomington. Game time is to be announced.
