PlayStation Direct, PlayStation's direct-to-consumer retail shop, appears to be preparing for a European expansion. The digital-only store first launched in September 2019 as a way for customers to buy games and hardware from PlayStation, often resulting in lower prices due to the lack of a middleman.
Prior to the release of the PlayStation 5, PlayStation Direct was how players could register for the chance to preorder the then unreleased console. Since then, PlayStation Direct has become one of the first retailers to get new PS5 stock, although typically not for long as sock sells out in minutes. Outside of being one of the few places to reliably find new PS5 inventory, PlayStation Direct also offers games and accessories directly from PlayStation, instead of through a third-party retailer.
As of now, PlayStation Direct only operates in the United States, however as VG247 is reporting, the store could be gearing up to expand into Europe. According to VG247, PlayStation Europe currently has a job posting up for a PlayStation Direct Europe director. The overview of the job explicitly states, "we are looking to build on the successful launch of new direct-to-consumer business in the US with the launch in Europe." The next paragraph adds, "this role will be responsible for the European sales strategy and delivering the sales targets of the direct to consumer hardware business in Europe."
So, clearly a PlayStation Direct expansion into Europe is in the works and coming at some point, it is just hard to say how soon it will happen. Considering that the project does not yet have a director to outline and guide the expansion, it is stands to reason that the move is in its very early stages. As the job listing notes,
"The PlayStation Store & Services (PlayStation Plus, PlayStation Now,..) businesses have continued to deliver substantial growth and represents a significant proportion of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s overall revenues as well as approximately 15% of Sony’s revenues."
Considering services like PlayStation Direct make up such a significant portion of Sony's profits, it goes without saying that getting a European storefront up and running as soon as possible would be high priority move.
A PlayStation Direct store in Europe would allow the continent greater access to the PlayStation 5, which has been notoriously difficult to find. While the United Kingdom may be departing Europe politically, the country is a shining example of these troubles, as several prominent U.K. retailers are not receiving any new PS5 consoles until some time next year. High demand combined with low supply and ridiculously proactive scalpers have thrown the market out of whack, so hopefully PlayStation Direct can find success in Europe and straighten things out.
