LSU self-imposes bowl ban
LSU is self-imposing a one-year ban on postseason play for this season as part an effort to cooperate with an NCAA probe into rules violations. "LSU leadership made this decision after careful deliberation and review of the NCAA rules violations that have been discovered in the university's cooperative investigation with the NCAA" and Independent Accountability Resolution Process, the athletic department said in a statement. "This decision reflects LSU's commitment to compliance with NCAA regulations and maintenance of institutional control." Much of the NCAA's investigation of LSU's football program pre-dates the promotion Ed Orgeron to head coach during the 2016 season and hiring of Athletic Director Scott Woodward in 2019. Some of the more serious allegations involved LSU booster John Paul Funes, who is a former chief executive for a Baton Rouge hospital foundation. He has been accused of paying a player's father $180,000 for a "no-show job" between 2012 and 2017.
Broncos CB suspended
A.J. Bouye's six-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances caps a disheartening first season in Denver for the eight-year veteran and leaves the Broncos without their top three cornerbacks. Bouye's suspension is the latest blow in a disappointing season rocked by an injury epidemic and the coronavirus pandemic that's snared a wide swath of players, coaches and team executives. Bouye received the supplement in question from the same medical professional that led to Will Fuller and Bradley Roby of the Houston Texans being suspended for six games last week, KOA NewsRadio in Denver reported. Fuller and Roby said last week they had been assured the product was safe, but it turned out to contain a substance on the league's banned list.
Steelers activate RB Conner
The Pittsburgh Steelers' struggling running game received a boost on Wednesday when James Conner was activated off the reserve/covid-19 list. Conner missed each of Pittsburgh's past two games, including a 23-17 upset loss to Washington on Monday that ended the Steelers' bid for an unbeaten season. Pittsburgh (11-1) managed 21 yards on 14 carries, the franchise's lowest single-game rushing total since 1970. Conner, in the final year of his rookie contract, has run for a team-high 645 yards and five touchdowns, including an 89-yard performance against Jacksonville in his previous start last month. He is expected to be in the starting lineup when Pittsburgh visits surging Buffalo (9-3) on Sunday night.
Packers place three on IR
Green Bay Packers running back/kick returner Tyler Ervin, safety Raven Greene and defensive lineman Billy Winn have all gone on injured reserve. The designation means that all three players must miss at least three games. The Packers (9-3) have four regular-season games remaining, starting with Sunday's game at Detroit (5-7). All three players were injured during the Packers' 30-16 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Ervin injured his ankle, Greene hurt his shoulder and Winn injured his triceps. Ervin had just returned Sunday after missing two games with injured ribs. He has 13 carries for 67 yards and 11 catches for 84 yards this season while also returning kicks and punts. Greene has 40 tackles, 1½ sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 interception. Winn has appeared in six games this season and has made six tackles.
Titans' put OL on reserve list
The Tennessee Titans placed first-round pick Isaiah Wilson on the Reserve/Non-Football Illness list Wednesday days after suspending the offensive lineman for a game. The Titans made Wilson the 29th pick overall out of Georgia in April after letting right tackle Jack Conklin leave as a free agent. But Wilson has had an eventful rookie season everywhere but the field where he has played only four snaps in one game. He was placed on the reserve/covid-19 list when he arrived at training camp and went back on that list Sept. 6. The rookie was arrested in September and charged with drunken driving after he was spotted doing "donuts" in an intersection before crashing into a concrete wall.
Jets' WR questionable
New York Jets rookie wide receiver Denzel Mims is dealing with what Coach Adam Gase called "a personal issue" and could miss the game Sunday at Seattle. Gase wouldn't detail the situation involving Mims on Wednesday since it's a personal matter, but it is believed the receiver -- who didn't practice -- could need to travel home to Texas to handle a family matter. Because Mims would then need to go through the NFL's extensive covid-19 protocols before being allowed back into the team's facility, that could prevent him from being fully cleared before the game against the Seahawks.
BASEBALL
Minor leagues to lose 40 teams
Jackson, Tenn., lost its Class AA minor-league baseball team for next season, one of 40 cities dropped as professional affiliates as Major League Baseball went through with its plan to cut to 120 farm teams. Jackson had fielded a AA team since 1998, first as a farm team of the Chicago Cubs through 2006, then of Seattle through 2016 and Arizona since 2017. The Amarillo Sod Poodles will switch to the Diamondbacks from San Diego, and the San Antonio Missions from Milwaukee to the Padres, dropping down from Class AAA. Each franchise's top four affiliates will include one team each at AAA, AA, High-A and Low-A. Additional clubs are allowed at spring training complexes and in the Dominican Republic. MLB ended the Professional Baseball Agreement that governed the relationship between the majors and minors. The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, which had governed the minors since 1901, is closing down, and the minors will be run from MLB's office in New York under the supervision of Peter Woodfork, MLB's new senior vice president of minor league operations and development.
Michaels selected to HOF
Al Michaels refers to his lack of baseball for much of his career "the one regret I might have." An absence from regular baseball broadcasts for the past quarter-century didn't prevent the 76-year-old from reaching the Hall of Fame. Michaels was voted the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcast excellence by the Hall on Wednesday and will be honored July 24 during the Hall's induction weekend. He broadcast for Hawaii in the Class AAA Pacific Coast League from 1968-70, the Cincinnati Reds from 1971-73 and the San Francisco Giants 1974-76. Michaels gained a national spotlight when ABC had MLB rights from 1976-89 and again in 1994 and 1995, coverage interrupted by the players' strike. He didn't broadcast baseball again until a game on the MLB Network in 2011.

U.S. men rout El Salvador
Chris Mueller scored twice in his international debut, Ayo Akinola got a goal in his first game and the United States overwhelmed El Salvador 6-0 on Wednesday night in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in its fourth and final exhibition of the pandemic-shortened year. Paul Arriola scored in his first start for club or country since tearing his right Achilles tendon in D.C. United's preseason match on Feb. 15. Brenden Aaronson, playing his second international game following his debut against Costa Rica in February, got his first goal. Before a crowd of about 2,500 in the Americans' first match before fans since the pandemic began, Bill Hamid got the shutout in his first international start since a 2-1 loss at Ireland in June 2018.
