Like with the Dallas Cowboys last week, the Carolina Panthers haven’t seen the Philadelphia Eagles in a few years. So let’s get familiar with one another again.
We asked Eagles Wire managing editor Glenn Erby five questions about the Panthers’ Week 5 foes. Here’s the tea:
Panthers Wire: The Eagles began the season in dominant fashion over the Atlanta Falcons. They would, however, go on to lose their next three games to the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs. How do you think they fared, even in the defeats, against that higher level of competition?
Eagles Wire: San Francisco and Kansas City were positive efforts and losses that this team can definitely use to grow chemistry and confidence.
The Dallas loss was a debacle, but more on quarterback Jalen Hurts having an uneven performance, coupled with head coach Nick Sirianni literally calling the worst run-pass ratio franchise history. They weren’t all bad losses and Philly was able to take some things away.
PW: In addition to Hurts and former Panther Cam Newton having mutual respect for one another, Hurts has been Newton-esque thus far in 2021. He currently leads the Eagles in both passing and rushing yards. Have you seen enough of the second-year quarterback to confidently say he’s that type of two-way, dynamic player and/or the future of the franchise?
EW: This team belongs to Hurts and it makes the most sense for the franchise going forward.
He spent the offseason improving his accuracy and decision-making, and it’s paid off to the tune of a 101.1 passer rating. His ability to extend plays with his legs, while also utilizing his vision makes the second-year star that much tougher to defend.
PW: Hurts’ favorite target so far has been rookie wideout Devonta Smith, who was selected just two spots after Carolina’s standout rookie Jaycee Horn back in the spring. How’s Horn’s fellow 2021 draftee looked early on?
EW: Smith is the guy and Philadelphia finally has a true, No. 1 wide receiver on the outside. He’s dynamic in creating separation from the cornerback with his feet, he’s surgical with his release, while also excelling as a runner after the catch.
PW: Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave may be the most overlooked player, at least on a broader stage, in Philadelphia. He’s already up to 5.0 sacks on the campaign, 1.5 off his career-high. What has he done so well that has gotten him off to this hot start?
EW: He’s a powerful game wrecker that excels at getting up the field while using his hands’ powerful lower body to help shed the opposing blockers. The presence of Fletcher Cox can’t be overlooked either, as the Eagles All-Pro is constantly double team, allowing Hargrave to flourish in one on one situations.
PW: Are there any other overlooked Eagles that Panthers fans should keep on an eye for Sunday?
EW: Kenneth Gainwell has quietly taken snaps away from Miles Sanders and the rookie, dual-threat running back has outperformed his counterpart early on. Gainwell is extremely athletic, a dynamic pass catcher, and a player to watch going forward.
