Greg Abbott Says Texas Laying 'Miles of Razor Wire' to Blockade U.S. Border - Newsweek

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said officials at the border are laying down "miles of razor wire" to tighten security amid reports of an approaching caravan of migrants.

Speaking on Newsmax's Eric Bolling The Balance, Abbott said the state has deployed "thousands upon thousands" of National Guard troops and agents from the Texas Department of Public Safety who are currently "barricading the border" as well as using large shipping containers to block areas where migrants may attempt to illegally enter the country.

"They're laying miles of razor wire upon razor wire," Abbott said.

"This afternoon, they will be dropping down some of these large containers that you see on 18 wheelers, the same type of containers that you see on the ships, to blockade the border. We are identifying the most likely locations where people may be coming across the border and doing everything possible to secure those areas."

A large caravan of migrants is reportedly making its way toward the border having set off from Mexico City several days ago.

Abbott also claimed that Texas is "building its own border wall" and that work will begin on that in the next two months. The governor said Texas has reappropriated more than $3 billion of state taxes to secure its border.

"Those are Texas taxpayer dollars doing the federal government's job," Abbott said.

"But listen, we have to do it. We have to step up. We have to secure our border, while the federal government twiddles its thumbs.

"Elections have consequences, and we see the consequence of Biden being the President of the United States. We need to change in administration because this is devastating to the United States," Abbott added.

Former president Donald Trump made building a wall across the entire U.S.-Mexico border one of his main presidential campaign promises, although it ultimately never came close to completion.

On his first day in office, Joe Biden signed an executive order that paused wall construction, saying that building a "massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution" and also a "waste of money."

Biden also scrapped a number of Trump's immigration policies in favor of what he referred to as more humane processes.

Huge Numbers Trying to Cross the Border

Since his time in office, record breaking numbers of people have been detained at the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, there have been more than 1.7 million migrant apprehensions at the southern border over the past 12 months— the highest number ever recorded and breaking a previous high of 1.6 million, which had stood since 2000.

A number of conservative figures have used the border crisis to criticize Biden, with polls also suggesting voters do not think he is handling the issue well.

In March, Abbott sent a letter to Biden demanding answers to the "humanitarian crisis" at the border.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has been contacted for comment.
