It’s safe to say no one expected this start to Bears quarterback Justin Fields’ NFL career. While rookie mistakes were to be expected, Fields has struggled mightily in a Bears offense that ranks among the worst in the NFL.

Through the first four weeks, Fields is completing 57 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and six interceptions — three of which came last week against the Bucs — for a 61.8 passer rating.

A hot topic this week has been who’s most to blame for Fields’ poor play. There’s been a lot of blame put on Matt Nagy, and rightfully so, given his offense has been abysmal for three straight seasons. Ultimately, the blame should fall on Nagy, who has failed to create a gameplay that suits Fields’ strengths.

But at the same time, Fields deserves some of the blame for his struggles. While there are signs that he’s progressing, he’s making the kind of mistakes that rookies are going to make as he learns the game. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s growing pains, but Fields deserves some of the blame for his struggles.

Granted, things have escalated rather quickly, and you can’t place most of the blame on Fields, who hasn’t been helped by a struggling offensive line and receivers who haven’t done their part at times. But at what point does Nagy become a detriment to Fields’ success?

As the Bears prepare for their Week 8 game against the 49ers, host Ryan O’Leary (@RyanO_Leary) and myself (@AlyssaBarbieri) are playing the blame game about Fields’ struggles and previewing Bears vs. 49ers.
