Elbow inflammation for Aroldis Chapman means the closer role is open for the Yankees, with no shortage of possibilities to replace him.
We could do with fewer possibilities, in fact. Right now, it's anybody's guess as to who would replace him.
The leading contender is probably Jonathan Loaisiga, if only because he handled the team's one save chance over the weekend. But maybe it would have gone to Zack Britton if he hadn't worked the previous two days. Britton had been serving as the eighth-inning guy, after all, and has the most closer experience of the three. Then there's Chad Green, who has a track record of dominance and stuff befitting a closer.
- Who will get saves for the Yankees? How do we rank Austin Gomber, Josiah Gray, and Logan Webb? We cover that and more on the Fantasy Baseball Today in 5 podcast. You can follow us to get the latest episodes on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
Britton might make more sense if he was pitching like the Britton of years past, but after missing most of the year with elbow and hamstring injuries, he's not back to form yet. I doubt he claims the job outright, but then again, I'm skeptical any of these three do. Chapman only has elbow inflammation, after all. An MRI revealed no structural damage, so it's possible he's ready to go within a couple weeks.
Will manager Aaron Boone settle on anyone as his replacement between now and then? Again, if I had to bet on one, it would be Loaisiga, but you shouldn't be surprised if it's a shared role either.
Here's who else made a case to be added this weekend ...
