The 2021 NFL season hasn’t even kicked off yet, but the draft coverage apparatus is already turning its attention to next offseason. Luke Easterling of Draft Wire published his latest 2022 three-round mock draft on Wednesday, and he predicts that the Jacksonville Jaguars will heavily address the defense once again.

That was a focus this offseason, as the team signed a number of quality defensive free agents like safety Rayshawn Jenkins, cornerback Shaquill Griffin, and defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris. Though the team’s first-round picks in the draft were both used on offense, the Jags took three defenders in the second and third rounds.

Here’s what Easterling thinks the Jaguars will do this time around.

No. 5 - S Kyle Hamilton (Notre Dame)

An All-American safety and semifinalist for the Bednarik Award as a sophomore in 2020, Hamilton should be one of the best defensive backs in college football this year. Jacksonville took safety Andre Cisco in the third round in 2021 and is hopeful he will develop into a starter at strong safety, but Hamilton is a different prospect. Much better in run stopping, he likely projects as a strong safety (Cisco could move if needed) in the NFL. He’s still solid in coverage, though, with five career interceptions. The Jags will hope they don’t pick this early next year, but if they do, Hamilton would be a solid option, especially if Jenkins struggles.

No. 37 - DL Perrion Winfrey (Oklahoma)

Winfrey, a JUCO transfer defensive tackle, wasn’t overly productive in his first season at Oklahoma, totaling just 17 tackles and half a sack. However, that was good enough for a Second Team All-Big 12 selection. The Jaguars could afford to bolster the defensive line, even after drafting Jay Tufele in the third round this offseason. While their potential starters Robertson-Harris, DaVon Hamilton, and Malcom Brown are signed at least through next season, it never hurts to improve the rotation in the trenches.

No. 69 - TE Jahleel Billingsley

Though he only finished with 18 catches for 287 yards and three touchdowns in 2020, Billingsley was overshadowed by Alabama’s other talented pass-catchers. His role expanded as the season went on, and with the departures of Devonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle, he’s expected to have a much bigger year for the Crimson Tide in 2021. Jacksonville didn’t do much to address its hole at tight end this offseason and barring a breakout season from someone like James O’Shaughnessy or Chris Manhertz, it will likely be a need once again next year.
