The Kansas City Chiefs are getting ready to face the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 13. This is likely the last time that the two AFC West division foes will play each other this season.

To learn more about Kansas City’s opponent, we spoke with managing editor Jon Heath over at Broncos Wire and asked him a few questions.

Chiefs Wire: After the Week 12 quarterback fiasco, what will it take for Denver to rally and have a better game against Kansas City in Week 13?

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Jon Heath: Thankfully for the Broncos, Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles all returned to the active roster this week and will be available on Sunday. Some of the team’s players seem to think they were hard done by the NFL, but they can’t take it out on the league. Perhaps the players will be able to take it out on KC, a team that Denver hasn’t given much trouble lately. The Broncos want to prove they’re better than their record. Denver should be able to score more than three points this week now that they’ve got a QB again and the players have some motivation to get a bad taste out of their mouths.

Chiefs Wire: The Broncos recently extended the contract of OT Garett Bolles. Can you tell Chiefs fans a bit about his turnaround and why he’s not the same player they may remember from previous seasons?

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Jon Heath: I think a lot of credit goes to Mike Munchak, Denver’s offensive line coach. Early in his career, Bolles had poor fundamentals and made fixable mistakes, but he just didn’t fix them. Munchak has helped him improve his technique, which had led to fewer penalties. Bolles, of course, also deserves a lot of credit because he’s the one that had to make the changes. He’ll still make mistakes, but Bolles isn’t the same player he was two years ago. His technique is better, and his mentality appears to be better as well.

Chiefs Wire: There have been some rumblings about Vic Fangio’s job security. What has been your evaluation of the Broncos’ coach through nearly two full seasons?

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Jon Heath: I haven’t taken the rumblings too seriously because it seems to be people referring to “the rumors” without anyone actually taking credit for actually starting them. Fangio obviously hasn’t been perfect, but he’s a defensive guy and Denver’s defense has been pretty good over the last two seasons (with a few hiccups here and there). Given that the Broncos have played without Courtland Sutton and Von Miller this year, I think it’s fair to give Fangio another shot in 2021. If he can’t get things back on track after three years, then it might be time to move on.

Chiefs Wire: On a similar note, there’s been a lot of chatter about the Broncos franchise potentially being sold. Do you think that John Elway would retain his role in the organization if the franchise was sold to new ownership?

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Jon Heath: Well, Elway’s contract is up after the 2021 season and it’ll be very interesting to see what the GM wants to do after that. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Elway retires when his contract runs out, but that’s just speculation. As for the franchise potentially being sold, that seems to be more and more likely given the messy family situation that’s tied up in court. If Elway doesn’t retire, his future with the team would likely depend on who becomes the next owner, and it’d be a lot of speculating to make a guess on that.

Chiefs Wire: In our first matchup this season you predicted a close win for Broncos. What are your feelings about Round 2?

Jon Heath: I was way too optimistic last time around, but I can’t help myself from doing it again. I’m not picking Denver to win, but I think the Chiefs are a beatable team. They are a great team, of course, with the greatest QB in the league, but we’ve seen the Raiders play two close games against them this year, so clearly the Chiefs have some weaknesses. If the Broncos’ defense is able to slow down KC’s offense a little, Denver’s own offense should be able to score enough points to at least make it interesting. Chiefs, 28-24.
