Wire to wire in the Shuvee - Times Union

Those associated with a 4-year-old speedball named Letruska knew the 4-year-old filly was fast.

The question was would she be fast for the entire 11/8 miles, the distance of the featured, Grade III $125,000 Shuvee at Saratoga Race Course Sunday?

Letruska answered that with a resounding yes. The daughter of 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver bounded out of the gate and never looked back. She ran fast the whole way around the Spa oval to win the Shuvee by a length.

"She is a very special horse because she has a lot of speed," said trainer Fausto Gutierrez. "She's very special and has a great career in front of her."

Gutierrez is not a known name in American racing, but is considered to be the best trainer in Mexico. Letruska was the first horse he brought to Saratoga; Sunday she gave him his first win.

Letruska finished fifth in the Grade I Ballerina at seven furlongs here on Aug. 8. Gutierrez decided to stretch her out and put her on the lead in the Shuvee. His filly did  not disappoint.

With jockey Joel Rosario on board, Letruska set swift fractions going the first quarter mile in 23.05 seconds, the half mile in 46.20 and six furlongs in 1:09.51. She was barely breaking a sweat.

"She is fast," said Rosario, who was on board for the first time. "But at a mile and an eighth, I didn't know. She kept fighting. She likes to go. She did it on her own."

Royal Flag and jockey Javier Castellano made a run at Letruska but their late move came up short. They finished three quarters of a length in front of Our Super Freak and jockey Jose Lezcano in third. Last year's Shuvee winner, Golden Award, finished fourth.

Nonna Madeline, the 5-2 favorite, was never a factor and finished eighth in the nine-horse field.

The final time was 1:48.94. Sent off as the 7-2 second choice, Letruska paid $9.30, $5.90, $4.30.

Tiz the Law will wait

Kentucky Derby favorite Tiz the Law will stay in the Spa City an extra day.

Originally, the colt was scheduled to leave Albany International Airport on Monday afternoon, but the trip will now be on Tuesday morning.

Besides Tiz the Law, Derby runners Ny Traffic and Money Moves will also be leaving Tuesday. The Monday fight was canceled because of unforseen non-mechanical-related delays.

"It's not a big deal," Jack Knowlton, the operating manager of Sackatoga Stable, which owns Tiz the Law, said Sunday. "The big thing was getting his (final) work in."

Tiz the Law had his final work on Saturday on the main track, going five furlongs in a swift time of 59.21 seconds,

Horse euthanized after 5th race

Right before she got to the finish line in the fifth race, Perfection broke down. Jockey Manny Franco was able to pull her up shortly after the wire, but the 2-year-old trained by Michelle Nevin, had a catastrophic injury to her left front leg. She had to euthanized.

This was the second on-track horse fatality in as many days. In Saturday's 10th race, Pot of Hunny, a 3-year-old filly trained by Gary Sciacca, was euthanized after injuries suffered when she broke out of the gate and threw jockey Eric Cancel. Cancel did not ride in Sunday's card.

Two other horses had to be put down after incidents during races.

Lady C, a 4-year-old filly trained by Tom Amoss, was euthanized on Aug. 16 and First Appeal, trained by Rudy Rodriguez, was put down on Aug. 20.
