Serbia is reportedly constructing a barbed-wire fence at its border with North Macedonia. Authorities in Belgrade have not yet commented on the issue.
Serbia has started erecting a barbed-wire fence at its southern border with North Macedonia, with the goal of blocking migrants from entering the country without a visa, according to reports from news agency AFP, local media outlets in Belgrade and Radio Free Europe.
Local media quoted statements from Presevo Mayor Sciprim Arifi, who said the construction of the fence is part of a deal with the European Union. Thus far, however, Serbian authorities have not confirmed the news.
More migrants on Balkan Route
In recent months, migrant flows from central Asia and the Middle East have increased along the so-called Balkan Route.
In 2015, the route saw over a million refugees cross southeastern European countries such as North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia on their journey towards Western Europe.
Right now, the situation is particularly critical in northwestern Bosnia-Herzegovina, at the border with Croatia, where thousands of migrants are camping, trying to cross the border and continue their journey to Western Europe.
