Frustration, Confusion And Closed Road All Due To 1 Downed Wire - Fairfield, CT Patch

FAIRFIELD, CT — A Fairfield resident took matters into their own hands after a fallen tree was left, blocking a road, for nearly a day because of a downed wire.

The wire, which police said belonged to Optimum, remained untouched, despite emergency personnel repeatedly notifying the cable and internet provider about the issue. But a spokeswoman for Optimum's parent company said it's not their wire.

The tree fell about 7 p.m. Tuesday on Warwick Avenue at Benedict Avenue, Fairfield police said in a Facebook post. United Illuminating Co. removed its downed wire later that evening, while a second wire was not moved until after 5 p.m. Wednesday, when a resident decided they'd waited long enough.

"A frustrated resident has since cut and removed the wire from the tree and roadway," police said in the Facebook post about 8 p.m. Wednesday, adding public works planned to remove the tree that night.

In an email Thursday, a representative of Altice USA, which owns Optimum, denied the company was responsible for the wire.

" … a field crew checked on the fallen tree yesterday and confirmed that the impacted wires are not Optimum lines and that no Optimum customers lost service as a result of the fallen tree," said Janet Meahan, vice president of communications. "We confirmed that again (Thursday) as well."

However, when asked for clarification Thursday in response to Meahan's email, police reiterated that the issue was a downed cable wire.

"In speaking with the resident at that location, it was confirmed to be the cable wire from the pole to their home," said a statement from the responding officer, provided by Lt. Antonio Granata. "In addition, a Cablevision employee was on scene (Wednesday) night (after homeowner cut it) and confirmed with the homeowner that it was their cable wire."

Cablevision was purchased by Altice in 2016.

In the Facebook post, police said they had notified the office of First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick about the issue regarding the wire, adding Kupchick had been in "constant communication" with Altice USA since Tropical Storm Isaias caused widespread utility outages in early August.

"The frustration and anger felt by residents is being relayed to these representatives in the strongest of terms possible," police said in the Facebook post, which also reminded residents never to go near downed wires.
