President Donald Trump tweeted that he directed the U.S. Treasury Department to prepare direct economic relief payments to Americans - and blamed House Democrats for not budging on the details of the next economic stimulus package.
The tweets come as Congress recessed without making any headway on the next round of COVID-19 economic relief, which would have likely included additional direct payments to Americans.
In other tweets, Trump also claimed the Treasury and Small Business Association are ready to offer PPP loans for businesses adversely affected by the virus.
Trump appeared frustrated at House Democrats, tweeting “DEMOCRATS ARE HOLDING THIS UP!”
I have directed @stevenmnuchin1 to get ready to send direct payments ($3,400 for family of four) to all Americans. DEMOCRATS ARE HOLDING THIS UP!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 14, 2020
The series of tweets will likely cause even more confusion, compounding on the uncertainty that ensued when Trump tweeted that he had approved a $400 weekly stipend for unemployment recipients.
Only time will tell.
