Whether you need a quarterback, running back, wide receiver or tight end, there are some intriguing options available on the fantasy football waiver wire in Week 5.

And, believe it or not, some of those options are at the running back position, where multiple starters suffered injuries on Sunday that could open the door for their backups, who are widely available, to see big workloads.

The cupboard is more bare at the wide receiver position, but there is still one out there who got on track in Week 4 and has a proven record of solid production.

At tight end, our two suggestions involve one player who is a shaky bet, and another who has gotten the job done multiple weeks in a row, making him a safer proposition.

Let’s find out who these aforementioned players are, as well as the rest of the best who could be sitting out there on your waiver wire this week.

QB Trey Lance, San Francisco 49ers

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

After sustaining an injury in Week 4, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could miss at least a few weeks, opening the door for Trey Lance to take over.

While he certainly wasn’t perfect, Lance did have a strong fantasy performance in relief of Jimmy G. The rookie totaled 157 passing yards and two touchdowns to go along with 47 yards on the ground in just two quarters.

Thanks to his dual-threat ability, Lance could provide big fantasy production in the weeks ahead, and at worst will have a safe floor. And, if he plays well enough, perhaps Garoppolo won’t get his job back.

QB Daniel Jones, New York Giants

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

The Giants have a lot of issues in 2021, but Daniel Jones is not one of them. In fact, Jones is off to a great start and has been one of the better fantasy quarterbacks thus far.

Jones shredded a talented New Orleans Saints defense for over 400 passing yards, 27 yards rushing and two scores. After four games, Jones is QB6 in fantasy.

Thanks to his dual-threat ability, Jones carries a safe floor and has a high ceiling, making him an ideal option. He also draws a juicy matchup in Week 5 in what is a possible shootout game against a Dallas Cowboys defense that is ceding the fourth-most fantasy points per game to signal-callers.

QB Sam Darnold, Carolina Panthers

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Ranking just ahead of Jones as the QB5 this season is Sam Darnold, who was tops among quarterbacks in fantasy points in Week 4.

Darnold isn’t just getting it done through the air with three 300-yard games so far this season, he’s also producing on the ground with five rushing scores in four games. In total, Darnold has found pay dirt 10 times.

RB Damien Williams, Chicago Bears

Mike Dinovo-USA TODAY Sports

Early tests reportedly show that David Montgomery avoided serious injury, but there’s a chance he misses at least a game his knee issue.

If that’s the case, go ahead and fire up his backup, Damien Williams. The 29-year-old carried the ball eight times for 55 yards and vultured a touchdown away from Montgomery. He also caught two passes for 15 yards.

Williams now stands to take over the workhorse load Montgomery has seen through four weeks, and that kind of volume is tough to find at running back, especially on the waiver wire at this point in the season. Adding to that, the Bears’ Week 5 opponent, the Las Vegas Raiders, are a middle-of-the-road defense against running backs.

However, keep an eye on Chicago’s injury report just in case. While he is expected to be OK, Williams did suffer a thigh bruise on Sunday. If you can squeeze him in, rostering Khalil Herbert, the Bears’ No. 3 back, makes sense.

RB Samaje Perine, Cincinnati Bengals

Syndication: The Enquirer

With the news that Joe Mixon is considered week to week with an ankle injury, Samaje Perine is a must-add ahead of Week 5.

Perine stands to take over for Mixon, who has tallied 22.5 touches per game over the first four weeks. When it comes to running backs, volume is king, and Perine should see plenty as long as Mixon is out.

RB/WR Cordarrelle Patterson, Atlanta Falcons

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

If you didn’t envision Cordarrelle Patterson scoring three touchdowns in Week 4, don’t feel bad because nobody did.

It’s worth noting that Patterson has seen plenty of looks the past three weeks, totaling 12.5 touches per contest, including at least six targets and six rushes per game in that span. Over the last two weeks, Patterson has 11 catches for 164 yards, and 13 carries for 54 yards.

Perhaps the most intriguing thing about Patterson is that he can be played at running back or wide receiver, giving you some flexibility on where to deploy him. He could be a solid depth option the rest of the way.

WR Jamison Crowder, New York Jets

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Lest we forget that Jamison Crowder finished as a top-25 receiver in fantasy points per game in PPR last season, and likely would have finished as a top-20 wideout overall if not for his missing four games.

After missing the first three games of this season, Crowder went right to work, hauling in seven catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. He and Zach Wilson seem to have some chemistry, as the rookie looked Crowder’s way nine times in total.

We know, it’s the Jets, but it’s hard to ignore the kind of fantasy potential sitting out there on the waiver wire. Crowder should be rostered in all leagues, and especially in PPR.

TE C.J. Uzomah, Cincinnati Bengals

Syndication: The Enquirer

We don’t want to go crazy over one good week — Uzomah had nine catches for 95 yards and two scores on Thursday night -— but seeing as how he plays one of the tougher positions to fill in fantasy, we’re including him.

We still don’t totally trust Uzomah, especially given the Cincinnati Bengals’ crowded group of pass-catchers, but he is worth a stash and becomes a more intriguing option if any of Cincinnati’s top three wideouts don’t play.

TE Dawson Knox, Buffalo Bills

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

The 2021 campaign looks like it could be a breakout one for Dawson Knox, who has scored at least one touchdown in each of his last three games.

On Sunday, Knox saw eight targets and reeled in five of them for 37 yards and two scores. Based on the fact that he’s now posted solid to great fantasy production in three straight games and is part of a high-volume passing attack, Knox needs to be on rosters moving forward.
