Sometimes following the 49ers closely makes it tough to not view some aspects of their season through red and gold-colored glasses.

To shake off some of the potential biases that may be baked into our pre-season predictions, we went to the opposing editors for the NFL Wire site of each 49ers opponent this year to get their thoughts on their team’s matchup against San Francisco. It turns out their predictions come through whatever colored glasses their team inherently pushes onto their faces, because the result is ugly for a 49ers team with playoff aspirations.

To the predictions!

Week 1: at Detroit Lions

The Lions will be brand new on so many levels: coach, QB, WRs, defensive scheme and attitude. They’re undertalented, but don’t be surprised if Dan Campbell inspires a fluke win at home in his debut. Lions 17, 49ers 16

Week 2: at Philadelphia Eagles

Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

The Eagles and 49ers meet in the second week of the NFL regular season and it’ll be an intriguing matchup from a quarterback standpoint.  The 49ers saw Jalen Hurts for two plays in 2020, but they’ll get four quarters of Philadelphia’s dual-threat signal-caller.  Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon will likely have his hands full with both Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance.   Philadelphia catches San Francisco looking ahead to a Week 3 matchup against the Packers. Week 3: vs. Green Bay Packers

Going on the road after a Monday night game won’t be easy, but the Packers find a way to beat a 49ers team that could be going through a transition at quarterback. Packers 27, 49ers 23

Week 4: vs. Seattle Seahawks

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

I’m betting on a vintage 2012-ish era slugfest here – featuring a lot of quarterback punishment and punts. Seattle takes it on a last-second field goal by Jason Myers. Seahawks 10, 49ers 9

Week 5: at Arizona Cardinals

Assuming there are two healthy teams, this could be a high-scoring affair. The 49ers’ offense is tough to defend if they are able to run the ball, which they have been able to do. However, Kyler Murray is sort of kryptonite for the Niners, so the Cardinals pull out a close win at home. Cardinals 33, 49ers 28

Week 7: vs. Indianapolis Colts

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Kyle Shanahan has his quarterback in Trey Lance but this is going to be one of those weird games where the rushing attacks for each team take over. The Colts barely win out in prime time thanks to their defense and take advantage of Lance’s inexperience. Colts 19, 49ers 17

Week 8: at Chicago Bears

The Bears Wire crew did respond to request for comment, probably because they are despondent that Andy Dalton is their starting quarterback. 49ers 1 million, Bears 0

Week 9: vs. Arizona Cardinals

The Niners get revenge in this one. Could Trey Lance be starting and could this be his first win? NFC West games are wacky, so I don’t see either team sweeping the other this year. If one team manages a sweep, they likely will be a playoff team. 49ers 27, Cardinals 24

Week 10: vs. Los Angeles Rams

C. Morgan Engel-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers will be one of the toughest teams the Rams face, but the defensive thorn in Sean McVay’s side, Robert Saleh, is now gone. That should help Los Angeles, but I think the 49ers win this one at home with a strong effort on D. 49ers 24, Rams 21

Week 11: at Jacksonville Jaguars

Bob Self/Florida Times-Union via Imagn Content Services, LLC

This game is past the mid-way point of the Jags’ season, so rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the team as a whole could be gelling at this point. Luckily, the Jags will also be home for this game instead of having to travel out west, where they struggle. Still, the 49ers are close to being a championship-caliber team when healthy and should outperform the young team. 49ers 30, Jags 21

Week 12: vs. Minnesota Vikings

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

Who will be at quarterback for the 49ers by the time they play the Vikings? Who knows? But Minnesota’s retooled defense should make it hard for Jimmy Garoppolo or Trey Lance. Vikings run the ball and control the game at the end. Vikings 17, 49ers 14

Week 14: at Cincinnati Bengals

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

By Week 14, the 49ers could be surging toward a playoff spot while the Bengals focus on the continued rebuild. This one is in Cincinnati, but a revamped offensive line could have all sorts of problems with the Nick Bosa-led pass-rush. 49ers 24, Bengals 17.

Week 15: vs. Atlanta Falcons

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco is undoubtedly a more talented team than Atlanta, but like last time, I think the Falcons will play with a little extra juice against their former OC.  Matt Ryan outplays rookie Trey Lance and leads the team to another late-game rally for the win. Falcons 20, 49ers 17.

Week 16: at Tennessee Titans

George Walker IV / Tennessean.com, Nashville Tennessean

While the 49ers have the defensive front to slow down Derrick Henry, they’re going to have a tough time keeping both A.J. Brown and Julio Jones in check if they fail to get consistent pressure thanks to a suspect group of cornerbacks in San Francisco.Tennessee’s underrated offensive line holds off the Niners’ impressive front just enough, allowing the Titans to lean on their passing attack to edge out a victory. Week 17: vs. Houston Texans

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

I think the Texans will be in the Davis Mills phase of the season, and it will be a battle between the rookie quarterbacks. Trey Lance will outclass Mills, but defense and special teams will give Houston the edge. Texans 23, 49ers 21

Week 18: at Los Angeles Rams

(AP Photo/Tony Avelar)

At this point in the season, we don’t know who will be starting at QB for the 49ers, but I’m guessing it’ll be Trey Lance. He’ll still have a decent day against a stout Rams defense, but L.A. will win this one with a fourth-quarter comeback by Matthew Stafford. Rams 28, 49ers 24

Final tally

Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers began this stretch of predictions with an 0-6 record, but then peeled off four in a row before dropping six of their final seven to finish with a 5-12 record. If that happens, it either means Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance were both bad or both hurt. Either way it’s not a good outcome for head coach Kyle Shanahan, who’d now be on the hot seat heading into Lance’s second season.
