Tropical weather outlook for the next two days, as of Sunday 4:45 p.m. [NHC/NOAA image]

The Atlantic hurricane season has continued its busy streak over the last month, with the 16th and 17th named systems of the season forming well out to sea as Peter and Rose became tropical storms on Sunday.

Peter is expected to drop heavy rain on Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and could get close enough to the Outer Banks to send long period swells towards our beaches by this weekend if it stays together while inching towards Bermuda.

Rose will stay in the eastern Atlantic after forming off Africa on Sunday, and is not expected to be any threat to land.

In the northern Atlantic, Odette became a post-tropical low on Saturday but its remnants are circling around and could regain tropical characteristics this week. Another tropical wave is expected to move off the African coast later this week.

Back in eastern North Carolina, high pressure overhead will keep an onshore flow in place which will mean dry weather with choppy ocean conditions and an increased risk of rip currents along the east-facing beaches for the final days of summer 2021.

A moderate risk of rip currents is forecast on Monday from the state line to Cape Hatteras, including Carova Beach, Swan Beach, Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Coquina Beach and Bodie Island, Pea Island, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon and Buxton.

Increased moisture from the onshore breeze could lead to a few pop-up showers and thunderstorms for the final days of summer. Autumn begins Wednesday at 3:20 p.m.

A cold front is forecast to slowly move through Thursday, which will keep Peter well offshore. That will be followed by seasonable temperatures and dry weather into the weekend.

A slight chance of showers between 10pm and midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 72. East wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

A slight chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. East wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Tuesday Night

A slight chance of thunderstorms before 8pm, then a slight chance of showers after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. East wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night

Showers likely, mainly after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
