The new production of the play, which won the 1943 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, will mark the 125th anniversary of Thornton Wilder’s birth.
“The Skin of Our Teeth,” Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play chronicling a family’s survival through an ice age, an epic flood and a war, will be revived next spring at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater.
Lileana Blain-Cruz will direct the production, which will be her Broadway debut. It is set to begin previews on March 31 and open on April 25 and will coincide with the 125th anniversary of Wilder’s birth in 1897.
“‘The Skin of Our Teeth’ is a play for right now,” Blain-Cruz, a resident director at Lincoln Center Theater, said in a statement on Monday. “The necessity and beauty of the power of language and stories to heal and move people forward is what we need now more than ever.”
“The Skin of Our Teeth,” a cosmic, three-part epoch-spanning comedy that won the 1943 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, opened on Broadway in 1942. It follows the Antrobus family of Excelsior, N.J., as they persevere, against the odds, through threat after threat.
When the play first opened, with a cast led by Fredric March and Tallulah Bankhead, Brooks Atkinson wrote in The New York Times that it stood “head and shoulders above the monotonous plane of our moribund theater.” Atkinson particularly admired Wilder’s “mischievous ideas about the informality of good theater.”
In a review of the 2017 Off Broadway revival of the play at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center in Brooklyn, Ben Brantley wrote in The Times that the play “can be quaint, creaky and tedious.” But, he added, “it feels as perversely suitable to 2017 as ‘Jingle Bells’ does to the Ice Age.”
The new production will feature sets by Adam Rigg, costumes by Montana Levi Blanco (“Fairview,” “A Strange Loop”), lighting by Yi Zhao, sound by Palmer Hefferan (“Grand Horizons,” “The Lifespan of a Fact”) and projections by Hannah Wasileski.
Casting will be announced later.
