The 2021 draftees haven’t even hit the field yet but that never stops the draft train. Draft Wire has released their latest 2022 NFL mock draft and fans of the New York Giants aren’t going to like it.

One reason is where analyst Luke Easterling has them selecting in the first round — eighth overall — which means they did not take a step forward in 2021 as many had hoped. Selecting 8th overall means they’ve won no more than five or six games this season. That will get people fired around here.

Another reason Giants fans aren’t going to dig this piece is the players that Easterling has them taking at No. 8 and No. 11 — the pick they got from the Bears via their draft day trade this year.

At No. 8, Easterling mocks USC edge rusher Drake Jackson to the Giants. A solid pick, but if they’re drafting an edge rusher this high it means that this year’s second round “steal” — Azeez Ojulari — failed to make an impact as a rookie and Leonard Williams flopped.

The Giants have a strong interior defensive front, but they need a difference-maker who can get after opposing quarterbacks off the edge. Even though Thibodeaux is long gone, the G-Men still have a high-ceiling prospect here in Jackson.

Explosive and athletic, with an impressive array of pass-rushing moves already, Jackson is still just scratching the surface of his potential. He would quickly become the team’s edge rusher.

With the 11th pick, Easterling has the Giants drafting over another high pick by taking Washington offensive tackle Jaxson Kirkland.

It’s only been a year, but it certainly looks like the Giants took the wrong offensive tackle at No. 4 overall last year with Andrew Thomas, while the likes of Tristan Wirfs, Mekhi Becton and Jedrick Wills all shined as rookies.

The other tackle spot isn’t in much better shape, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Giants use their additional first-round pick to find a new starter. Kirkland is a mauler of a blocker who should be getting more buzz as a potential top-15 pick.

Can’t really disagree with that logic. Right now both Andrew Thomas and Matt Peart have not given the fanbase any reason to be confident in their ability to protect Daniel Jones.

There’s a lot at play here that needs to be addressed. If the Giants finish 6-11 or 5-12, general manager Dave Gettleman will be surely be replaced and who knows whether Joe Judge survives. The new GM might not see what they did in Daniel Jones and decide to package their picks for a quarterback. They could blow this whole thing up — again.

I told you you weren’t going to like it.
