Many lists of the top tight ends in the NFL this offseason have featured Detroit’s T.J. Hockenson as a fixture in the top five. But Hockenson falls short of the mark in the TE rankings from Touchdown Wire.
In fact, Hockenson didn’t even crack the No. 6 spot. Analyst Mark Schofield ranked the third-year Lions tight end as the seventh-best at his position entering the 2021 season.
The arrow is definitely pointing up, as Schofield notes in the commentary, but the shallow body of work over his first two seasons holds Hockenson back in the rankings,
With his blocking ability, and the skill-set to get open against man or zone coverage, Hockenson is in good position to climb even higher on this list after 2021.
The top three, as they are almost universally in some order, are George Kittle, Travis Kelce and Darren Waller. In these rankings, Mark Andrews, Dallas Goedert and Rob Gronkowski also top Hockenson.
