Famed daredevil Nik Wallenda of the Flying Wallendas returned to Western New York for another high-wire stunt Thursday, nine years after he crossed Niagara Falls in a nationally televised event.
Wallenda performed a 320-foot walk about five stories up over Buffalo’s West Avenue on a wire about five-eighths of an inch thick. It’s the longest high-wire walk ever in the city of Buffalo.
The stunt marked the opening of a new health clinic, the Health Professions Hub at D’Youville College, which will serve the city of Buffalo’s westside while letting students gain clinical experience.
Watch Wallenda’s walk on D’Youville College’s Facebook (starting at the 50:47 mark), or in the WGRZ video below:
It may not seem as dangerous as some of his other stunts, such as crossing an active volcano in Nicaragua, but can be just as deadly.
“Actually when I told my dad about this walk just last week, he said be careful, those are the ones that could get you. The reality is my great grandfather lost his life on a walk that was minuscule in comparison to other walks that he did. So the dangers are always there, always relevant,” Wallenda told WIVB.
Wallenda’s great-grandfather, Flying Wallendas founder Karl Wallenda, died in 1978 after falling from a 100-foot-high wire during a promotional event in Puerto Rico.
Nik Wallenda, 42, is an aerialist who holds 11 Guinness World Records. He was the first acrobat to walk across Niagara Falls in 2012, and has since performed other high-profile stunts, such as crossing the Grand Canyon and New York’s Times Square.
