Famed daredevil Nik Wallenda of the Flying Wallendas is back in Western New York for another high-wire stunt, nine years after he crossed Niagara Falls in a nationally televised event.
WGRZ reports Wallenda will perform a 320-foot walk about five stories up over Buffalo’s West Avenue on a wire about five-eighths of an inch thick. It will be the longest high-wire walk ever in the city of Buffalo.
It may not seem as dangerous as some of his other stunts, such as crossing an active volcano in Nicaragua, but can be just as deadly.
“Actually when I told my dad about this walk just last week, he said be careful, those are the ones that could get you. The reality is my great grandfather lost his life on a walk that was minuscule in comparison to other walks that he did. So the dangers are always there, always relevant,” Wallenda told WIVB, referring to Flying Wallendas founder Karl Wallenda, who fell from a 100-foot-high wire in 1978 and died.
How to watch:
The event will take place at 3:30 p.m. ET today (Thursday, June 17, 2021) and will be streamed live on the D’Youville College Facebook page.
The stunt will also be shown on News 4 WIVB in Buffalo as part of a special broadcast beginning at 3 p.m.
According to the Associated Press, Wallenda’s stunt will mark the opening of a new health clinic, the Health Professions Hub at D’Youville College. Officials at the small private university say it will serve the city of Buffalo’s westside while letting students gain clinical experience; D’Youville will also host a block party on West Avenue with carnival games in the parking lot of the new Hub building.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and New York State \Senator Tim Kennedy will be on hand for the event, according to WIVB.
Wallenda, 42, is an aerialist who holds 11 Guinness World Records. He was the first acrobat to walk across Niagara Falls in 2012, and has since performed other high-profile stunts, such as crossing the Grand Canyon and New York’s Times Square.
