SULPHUR — Barbe’s trio of big scoring performances was enough to offset an explosion by Oakdale’s Leon Posey IV in the Bucs’ 85-57 win in the opening day of the Sulphur Thanksgiving Classic.
Posey scored a game-high 32 points, but the Bucs lead wire-to-wire, with Jabbari Barry, Ja’Quise Richmond and Ethan Marque each scoring 19 points or more.
Barry jump-started the Bucs attack, scoring 15 first-half points as Barbe raced to a 46-29 halftime lead. Barry drilled four 3-pointers and ended the us going with a couple of threes early on,” Bucs head coach Carl Klein said. “That opened up some other things for us — penetration, drive-and-kick and the inside a little bit. I like the way we were about to go inside-out and use our motion.”
Klein said Barry’s work on both ends of the court spurred the team.
“He’s our floor leader on the offensive and defensive end,” Klein said. “He sees the floor
half with a three-point play. Richmond scored nine of his 19 points in the third quarter and Marque scored 11 of his 21 in the fourth quarter.
The Bucs scored at least 19 points in each quarter.
“We came out and Jabbari got extremely well. (Richmond) has an inside presence, can put the ball on the floor and can get to the rim a little bit, can post up and score around the basket. They are both impact guys for us.”
Posey made a big impact as well, combining long-range bombs with swoops to the hoop to confound the Bucs defense. He scored 10 points in the first quarter and 12 in the third.
“We didn’t do a very good job defensively, we didn’t find him, that is something we are going to have to clean up,” Klein said. “When we have somebody hurting us, we have to go out and find him, do a better job of contesting him, forcing him to the help side and making him give it up.”
D.J. Johnson added 13 points for the Warriors. Jayden Gradney scored 11 points off the bench for Barbe.
The tournament continues with three games today. Midland plays St. Louis at 3 p.m., followed by Rayne versus Barbe and LaGrange versus Oakdale.
