QUARTERBACKS
Trey Lance vs. Vikings in Week 12
Maybe you’re sick of seeing Lance’s name in this column every week while he continues to ride the pine. I still think the 49ers will eventually put their quarterback of the future back on the field, and I think he’ll put up good point totals once he’s back in the lineup. Lance is an extraordinary runner, and running quarterbacks are fantasy gold. The 49ers have a nice stretch of schedule from Week 13 to Week 17, with games against the Seahawks, Bengals, Falcons, Titans, and Texans.
Tyrod Taylor vs. Jets in Week 12
Hey, I’m not going to try to tell you Taylor is a good quarterback. I’ve been Taylor-skeptical ever since his days in Buffalo when a legion of believers started calling him “Ty-god.” But there’s value to Taylor’s running ability, and he might have some Week 12 passing upside against the Jets, who have the worst opponent passer rating in the league (108.1) and are giving up 8.4 yards per pass attempt.
RUNNING BACKS
Eno Benjamin BYE in Week 12
Cardinals RB Chase Edmonds is on IR and isn’t eligible to return until Week 14. That leaves Benjamin as the top backup to James Conner, who’s had durability issues in the past. Benjamin is just one injury away from a lead role in one of the NFL’s better offenses. As noted in this space last week, Benjamin ran for 2,725 yards and 26 touchdowns in his final two seasons at Arizona State and also caught 77 passes for 630 yards and four touchdowns over that stretch.
Qadree Ollison at Jacksonville in Week 12
There just aren’t many interesting waiver wire stashes at running back this week other than Benjamin, but Ollison is worth a mention. With Cordarrelle Patterson out for the Falcons on Thursday night, Ollison played ahead of Wayne Gallman and played the same number of snaps as Mike Davis. Ollison had 9-34-0 rushing and looked friskier than Davis who had three carries for one yard. Ollison has been with the Falcons since 2019 and hadn’t been able to get any sort of traction until Thursday. It’s more than fair to be skeptical about what he can contribute over the next six weeks, but Ollison may have just replaced Davis as the complement to Patterson.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Bryan Edwards at Cowboys in Week 12
With Henry Ruggs no longer with the Raiders, Edwards has an opportunity to play a bigger role in the Las Vegas offense. In the Raiders’ first game since Ruggs’ arrest for a fatal DUI, Edwards had zero catches on four targets. Last week, he only saw four targets but had three catches for 88 yards and a touchdown. The schedule sets up nicely for Edwards and the Raiders’ passing game down the stretch, with Dallas this week, then Washington, Kansas City, Cleveland, Denver, and Indianapolis.
Kendrick Bourne vs. Titans in Week 12
Bourne has quietly been having a productive season. From Week 3 to Week 10, he was the WR15 in half-point PPR scoring. He gets a nice Week 12 matchup against a Titans defense that’s giving up 27.7 fantasy points per game to wide receivers, the third-highest total in the league.
TIGHT ENDS
Cole Kmet at Lions in Week 12
Kmet is coming off the best game of his career, a 6-87-0 performance against the Steelers in Week 9, before the Bears went on bye. The second-year man from Notre Dame saw a season-high eight targets in that game, and he’s seen at least five targets in each of his last four outings. Allen Robinson is dealing with a hamstring injury, and the Bears have a thin WR corps, so Kmet should continue to play a prominent role.
Evan Engram vs. Eagles in Week 12
Engram is so often disappointing, but we know he’s a terrific athlete, and he has an inviting Week 12 matchup against an Eagles defense that’s giving up 11.3 fantasy points per game to tight ends. Philadelphia gave up a combined 8-136-0 to Broncos TEs Noah Fant and Albert Okwuegbunam in Week 10, a combined 11-126-2 to the Chargers’ TE trio in Week 9, and 10-89-0 to the Lions’ T.J. Hockenson in Week 8.
DEFENSES
Philadelphia Eagles at Giants in Week 12
The Eagles’ defense ranks a respectable 13th in fantasy points per game and has a Week 12 date with the Giants. Daniel Jones is always a good quarterback to target with opposing defenses. He has seven fumbles and five interceptions and 19 sacks in nine games this season. In 36 career games, Jones has 36 fumbles, 27 interceptions, and 102 sacks.
Chicago Bears at Lions in Week 12
The Bears’ defense ranks 18th in fantasy points per game but gets a favorable Week 12 draw against the Lions on Thanksgiving Day. Opposing defenses are averaging 8.1 fantasy points per game against Detroit, and the Lions haven’t scored 20 points in a game since Week 1.
