Weekend Waiver Wire Stashes: Week 9 (2021 Fantasy Football) - FantasyPros

Bryan Edwards

Bryan Edwards could get his moment to shine.

We’re at a point in the season where waiver wires are looking slim. Most sneaky “boom or bust” candidates have already boomed and busted. Most rookies have already cemented themselves as roster staples (a la Kadarius Toney (WR- NYG)) or fizzled entirely (Looking at you, Tutu Atwell (WR – LAR)).

Many fantasy managers aren’t even touching the waiver wire anymore. If your team is looking solid, you have valid handcuffs, and maybe you’re streaming defenses a week in advance, I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t make any high-priority add/drops.

However, here are some players who are flying under the radar and could, if the stars align, become fantasy relevant this season.

Ronald Jones (RB – TB)

25.5% rostered (ESPN)

Admittedly, I had a first-class ticket on the Rojo hype train this year. I thought the Buccaneers loved him. No matter how many times he let them down, they rode him. The Buccaneers brought Leonard Fournette (RB – TB) back for scraps, and Jones even began the year as the Bucs RB1. Alas, his performance has left me Jonesing for the potential he’s flashed. As Fournette’s backup, Jones has quietly averaged 4.9 yards per attempt over his last five games. If Fournette gets banged up, Jones is next in line.

Bryan Edwards (WR – LV)

21.8%

With Henry Ruggs no longer a Las Vegas Raider, Edwards is the premiere outside receiving threat. Edwards could see some favorable matchups if defenses focus their attention on stopping Darren Waller (TE – LV). With Edwards’ big frame and big-play ability, he won’t need a ton of volume to post some startable statlines potentially.

Russell Gage (WR – ATL)

15.0%

Gage is similar to Edwards, as both teams’ tight ends (Waller and Kyle Pitts (TE – ATL)) are effectively the respective WR1. However, with Calvin Ridley (WR – ATL) stepping away from football and Atlanta not signing or trading for any receivers of note, Gage is assuming the WR1 role. Defenses will likely key in on Kyle Pitts, making Gage’s life a bit easier. In the three games Gage has played, he’s seen 15 targets, catching nine passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.

Dan Arnold (TE – JAX)

13.3%

The Jacksonville Jaguars weren’t going to trade their 2020 first-round pick CJ Henderson for table scraps. In an offense without an effective tight end, Arnold assumed the role quickly. Over his last three games, Arnold has seen 23 targets, and as his chemistry with Trevor Lawrence (QB – JAX) strengthens, he could emerge as a fantastic streaming option or better.

Carlos Hyde (RB – JAX)

9.7%

James Robinson (RB – JAX) missed a few practices this week, making Carlos Hyde a priority pickup for those who roster Robinson. Hyde is next in line to receive a more significant workload if Robinson misses any time. At this point in the season, any running backs who are handcuffable (let’s call that a word?) should be.

Terrace Marshall Jr. (WR – CAR)

4.7%

The 2021 2nd-round pick is out of the concussion protocol and should slide back into his role in Carolina’s offense. Marshall’s snap counts steadily increased before his week six concussion (61%, 71%, 76% in weeks 3, 4, and 5). I don’t anticipate his breakout game coming with backup quarterback P.J. Walker (QB – CAR) under center, but weirder things have happened. Considering Robby Anderson (WR – CAR) has been neglected in this offense, it wouldn’t be shocking if Marshall finished the season firmly as Carolina’s WR2.
