The Kansas City Chiefs are getting ready to kick off the 2021 NFL season with a showdown against the Cleveland Browns at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 1.
The Chiefs lead the Browns 14-11-2 in the all-time series between the two teams. Cleveland is looking for revenge after Kansas City sent them home in the divisional round of the playoffs last season.
To learn more about Kansas City’s opponent, we spoke with managing editor Jared Mueller over at Browns Wire and asked him a few questions.
Chiefs Wire: Odell Beckham Jr. was injured and didn’t play in the divisional round game last season. What will a healthy OBJ bring to the Cleveland offense?
Browns Wire: OBJ is a homerun hitter and can take a slant or a nine route for six points at almost any time and has returned from injury very well. Outside of his overwhelming talent, Beckham provides the Browns with a player who takes the top off the defense and can force teams to choose between risking him beating them deep or having a lightbox for Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt to run against.
Chiefs Wire: Speaking to the media earlier this week, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was pretty confident in his ability to cover Chiefs TE Travis Kelce. Do you think it’s a good idea to match the rookie up against Kelce in his first game as a professional?
Browns Wire: Owusu-Koramoah has looked very good both in coverage and as a blitzer in the preseason but will not be Kelce’s primary defender the entire game. LB Anthony Walker and the team’s (likely) three starting safeties, John Johnson III, Ronnie Harrison and Grant Delpit, will likely have responsibilities against Kelce, a Cleveland area native.
Chiefs Wire: There has been a lot of talk about the roster improvements Cleveland made this offseason. Do you think there is an area on the roster that is weaker compared to when they last faced the Chiefs?
Browns Wire: The only place this could be true is special teams. The Browns lost Tavierre Thomas and Tae Davis in free agency and then waived KhaDarel Hodge at the final cutdown. It is likely that rookies, primarily, replace those key special teams players.
Besides that, the Browns didn’t lose a single player that they didn’t upgrade from, at least on paper. The biggest concern is all of the new defenders coming together as a unit after many didn’t play in the preseason.
Chiefs Wire: Are there any underrated players on the Browns’ roster that Chiefs fans should know about ahead of the game?
Browns Wire: While they may not have huge statistical games, Rashard Higgins and David Njoku are not household names that opposing fans seem to know about. Baker Mayfield has a great connection with Higgins and often finds him on the most important plays of the game. (Chiefs fans remember him as the guy who fumbled near the goal line after getting (illegally) hit (in the head) by Dan Sorensen. Njoku is an athletic marvel who has really worked hard this offseason on his hands.
On the defensive side of the ball, Harrison was the team’s third or fourth-best defender last year and this year is closer to their tenth. He is versatile as a run defender as well as in coverage.
Chiefs Wire: What is your prediction for the game? Do you think the Browns can exact some revenge for their divisional round defeat at the hands of the Chiefs?
Browns Wire: I believe this game is more important to Cleveland than it is to Kansas City. I’m not sure how the Chiefs offense is ever stopped but know that the Browns defense has added a ton of speed to try to do so. Kansas City’s defense has some holes and Cleveland’s offense is set up to win in multiple ways.
I believe the Browns get revenge and set up a future matchup in the AFC Championship Game down the road: Browns 38, Chiefs 35
