After being designated for assignment by the Giants last week, right-handed pitcher Jimmie Sherfy will have a chance to make the organization regret its decision.
Sherfy was claimed on waivers by the Dodgers Tuesday and could be featured out of the bullpen when they match up with the Giants for seven games between the All-Star break and the trade deadline.
Sherfy appeared in 10 games for the Giants this season and posted a 4.22 ERA with nine strikeouts, but lost his spot in the team’s bullpen due to a roster crunch created when the club activated Tyler Beede off the 60-day injured list. Beede’s addition to the 40-man roster required the Giants to clear space and Sherfy, who is out of minor league options, was the player the organization chose to cut.
If Sherfy appears in a game for the Dodgers, Los Angeles will become the third different National League West team he’s pitched for as the right-hander began his career in 2017 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Dodgers have long been touted for their impressive depth, but president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman has been active on the waiver wire this season as he’s employed a strategy that immediately helped Farhan Zaidi amass depth when he first arrived in San Francisco.
Sherfy and former Giants first-round draft choice Phil Bickford, who began the year with Milwaukee, have both been acquired on waivers by the Dodgers this season. Friedman and the Dodgers also placed a waiver claim on pitching prospect Ashton Goudeau after the Giants designated the right-hander for assignment earlier this year.
