STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A hazardous live wire hanging in the middle of the street caused a teenage boy’s bike to catch on fire on East Stroud Avenue in Great Kills Thursday evening.

Jordan Yulfo, 16, of Great Kills, was riding his bike with friends when he ran into the wire, completely unaware that it was there.

He was not injured in the incident.

“I looked back for a few seconds, and when I turned around I crashed into it,” he told the Advance/SILive.com. “Look at it - all surrounded by stuff. I couldn’t even see it.”

Yulfo says he heard the sound of sparks, and he looked down to see that his bike’s tire had started to burn.

“I got nervous - it was a natural reaction, I just tugged my bike away,” Yulfo explained. “I completely panicked.”

The teen said that his adrenaline “started rushing so much” that he could barely breathe after the incident.

Quickly after the bike’s tire caught on fire, it diminished on its own, Yulfo said.

Four people immediately called 911 emergency services, according to the teen.

FDNY and NYPD were seen on scene Thursday evening. The call came in at 7:11 p.m., according to a spokesperson for the FDNY.

FDNY left the scene at 7:49 p.m. after Yulfo and his mother refused further medical treatment.

ISAIAS CLEAN-UP CONTINUES

More than 2,000 trees fell on Staten Island when Tropical Storm Isaias slammed across Staten Island on Tuesday, many taking power lines down with them.

More than 20,000 customers on Staten Island were without power following the storm, and the multi-day effort to clean up the trees and repair power lines left borough residents on all shores frustrated Thursday.

The wire on East Stroud Avenue was still hanging in the street on Thursday night, blocked off by FDNY tape.

Scorch marks could be seen on the pavement where the tire on Yulfo’s bike burned.

“We were just riding around. It happened at the last second, I totally didn’t expect it,” he said.
