Samsung Announces Bean-Shaped, Wire-Free Galaxy Bud Live Earphones - PCMag

susilangs.blogspot.com

Yes, the ear beans are here. Samsung on Wednesday announced the Galaxy Buds Live, the bean-shaped true wireless earbuds that everyone's been talking about. The Buds offer active noise cancellation and go on sale August 6 for $169—nearly $100 less than Apple's $249 noise-cancelling AirPods Pro.

The Galaxy Buds Live come in black, gold, or white. They look like beans because the inside of your ear is shaped kind of like a bean.

"Nearly one third of wireless headphone users have their buds in for more than six hours a day," Doug Wegener, Samsung's director of product planning said. "So we've developed earbuds fit for this unique time. They're ergonomic and engineered to tune out noise."

They earphones sit a little loosely in your ear, not creating a seal. They have 12mm drivers and a bass duct, creating audio where "voices sound like they're in the same room with you," Wegener said.

Samsung promises between 5.5 and 8 hours of music playback time, and between 4.5 and 5.5 hours of talk time, depending on noise cancellation and Bixby options. Of course, the Buds come with a charging case, which has four additional charges in it. The small, squarish case supports fast charging, and can charge wirelessly on a pad or on the back of a compatible Galaxy phone.

The Buds are rated IPX2 for splash resistance, which means you shouldn't swim with them. They have active noise cancellation, but it looks like they may not offer as much passive noise cancellation as over-ear headsets. That's because they have a physical air vent to prevent the Buds from feeling like they're plugging your ears. Samsung says the vent offers a "more ambient listening experience," but that just sounds to me like a good spin on not totally blocking out outside noise.

The earphones pair with Samsung's Galaxy Wearable app that lets you turn noise cancellation on and off, alter the EQ, customize tap controls, and find missing earpieces. While they're designed to primarily work with Bixby, they can also be set to work with Google Assistant.

The Galaxy Buds Live can also be used as remote mics for video recording if you have a new Galaxy Note20 phone, which is pretty cool.

The real test here will be in audio performance, and of course we haven't been able to check that out yet. I'm a little concerned that the weird shape of the Buds might translate to a weird fit, but the $169 price for active noise cancellation is certainly promising. We'll be putting the earphones to the test shortly, so check back for a full review soon.
